Nomination

I nominate GTA4PC to become a member of staff. His/Her edits are of consistant quality and has shown good knowledge of how the wiki works.

GTA4PC, please reply with whether you accept or decline this nomination, and why.

I accept this nomination and the reasons I would want to become a staff around here would be that I try my best to keep the articles as clean as possible and help my best to put as much information as possible to pages I contribute to. --GTA 4 PC 00:07, 10 January 2009 (UTC)

Questions

Do you think vandalism is a big problem at GTW? How would you deal with someone who did something like delete all the content on one page? What might be the possible reasons for them doing that? Gboyers talk 16:18, 10 January 2009 (UTC)

Not really, vandalism around here is not much of a problem compared to wikipedia which has got every-day vandals. If someone would delete all content or something, I would just revert what they did and send them a warning to their talk page. The reason for them doing it must be that they are bored or they think it's funny. --GTA 4 PC 16:43, 10 January 2009 (UTC)
You didn't mention the possibility of it being an accident. A new member could easily delete a paragraph accidentally. Or if they thought it was wrong, they may just remove it instead of checking or discussing. Imagining an incident that might be an accident, or might be vandalism, how would you deal with this? Gboyers talk 00:45, 11 January 2009 (UTC)
If it would be an accident, I would just revert the mistake and remind the user to preview their edits before doing anything and you can easily tell what is an accident when looking at users contributions. --GTA 4 PC 11:38, 11 January 2009 (UTC)

What do you think is the hardest thing for new editors to get the hang of (whether a technical skill, a policy or just the way we do things here); how would you spot they were having difficulty; and how would you help them? Maybe explain what was the hardest thing you've had to learn whilst being here? Gboyers talk 16:18, 10 January 2009 (UTC)

The hardest thing to get used to is formatting a page properly without small issues like red links or other things a little hard to spot. I am glad to help users who keep having difficulties with doing a 'near-perfect' edit that lacks errors and other grammar issues, and how would I help them? Well I try my best to explain it in an understandable way and be friendly. --GTA 4 PC 16:43, 10 January 2009 (UTC)

Becoming staff isn't a reward for good edits. It's work that needs to be done on the wiki, so it's a job. Why do you think that you would be best for that job? Biggest GTA Fan EverTalk 22:34, 10 January 2009 (UTC)

I'm not claiming or thinking that I would be the best ever for that job, but I believe I have enough experience with editing to get on with it. As a normal "powerless" editor at the moment I'm doing my best to help and afford, if I have more abilities I do what I can in them as well. --GTA 4 PC 22:53, 10 January 2009 (UTC)

Are there any little tasks you do around the wiki that you are particularly proud of? Gboyers talk 00:45, 11 January 2009 (UTC)

I mostly am into editing articles centered around Grand Theft Auto: Vice City Stories and expanding the articles with more information and so on. --GTA 4 PC 11:38, 11 January 2009 (UTC)

Could you give one example of what you think is one of the best pages on this wiki, and a brief explanation of why you chose that. It should probably be an informational article, but you could use a list or category or similar if you explain why. Gboyers talk 00:45, 11 January 2009 (UTC)

Liberty City in GTA IV is well written, informative with great wording plus it's an interesting read as well. --GTA 4 PC 11:38, 11 January 2009 (UTC)

Do you have any questions about the wiki, its staff or the role of a Moderator, or any final comments before we make our decision? Gboyers talk 00:45, 11 January 2009 (UTC)

Not really. I have been into wiki's since a long time. And I don't think I would fail as a moderator but I may not be on all day, just so you know. --GTA 4 PC 11:38, 11 January 2009 (UTC)

I just went through this users contribs and randomly clicked the diffs links. An important part of being staff is knowing how the wiki works, and this user does. Examples are the basics, such as using GTA San Andreas for the game and San Andreas for the place (I just patrolled an edit where this user fixed that). Another example is using Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas (long name) on the first mention of a game (another edit I just patrolled). The two main things that moderators are trusted with are the patrolling system, and the ability to move pages. Both of these tools require knowing how the wiki works, as you need to know how to improve an edit that you patrol (or what a good edit is), or what to move a page to. I think that GTA4PC could be trusted with both those tools. GTA4PC, How would you use the new tools (see here for a list) to help the wiki? Biggest GTA Fan EverTalk 08:16, 10 January 2009 (UTC)

I would do my best and use them as good as possible. Specially when it comes to vandalism. --GTA 4 PC 11:53, 10 January 2009 (UTC)

I'm happy - This user clearly focuses on helping users, and becoming a moderator would be a good way to help them do that. He just needs to remember to "assume good faith", and consider the possibility that something might be an accident, rather than an a deliberate attempt to vandalise. I suggest he read through the List of Policies and the staff half of Tasks, just to get a hang of how things work at our end. Unless there are any objections, I shall issue the promotion to Moderator. Gboyers talk 14:13, 11 January 2009 (UTC)

I obviously support the promotion of GTA4PC to staff, as otherwise I would not have made the nomination. GTA4PC has shown good knowledge of how to edit the wiki, has contributed a great deal (through, for example, creating the majority of the Missions in GTA Vice City Stories articles) and has shown good use of talk pages. I agree with Gboyers, that an "assume good faith" line should be taken before banning. Familiarising with the tasks is also good advice, as there is always something to do with categorising pages, linking to other pages and deleting/flagging things for deletion.
