Ivan first appeared during "Bull in a China Shop", having just concluded a meeting with Vladimir Glebov and leaves just as Niko Bellic is entering. Later, Vlad orders Niko to execute him by Mikhail Faustin's command. Niko's hunt for Ivan leads them to a rooftop chase, during which Ivan warns Niko that Vlad is a nobody, and that killing for him is pointless. Ivan takes a bad step and dangles off the edge of a destroyed fire escape. At this point, Niko has to decide whether to kill him or not.
If Niko decides to kill Ivan, he steps on Ivan's fingers, sending him falling to his death. Niko finds out later that Ivan was right: Vlad was a nobody, with no allies willing to step in to avenge him.
If Niko chooses to spare Ivan, he helps him up, stating that he can't be that bad if Vlad wants him dead. Ivan repeatedly thanks Niko Bellic by calling him a "good man". Niko later meets Ivan on the streets of Alderney, where Ivan once again thanks Niko for sparing his life, and tells him that he is engaged to a beautiful American woman who he has sex with three times a week. He lives in Alderney, and has a new job as a "money lender." Niko helps Ivan collect a debt from several hustlers who choose not to repay him, they try to whack Ivan but they do not survive the gunfight because Niko saves Ivan again.
