Catalina is a recurring character in the Grand Theft Auto series who appears as the main antagonist in Grand Theft Auto III (set in 2001) and as a supporting character in Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas (set in 1992). She is a criminal in Red County in GTA San Andreas and the leader of the Colombian Cartel in GTA III. She is also the cousin of Varrios Los Aztecas leader Cesar Vialpando. She is voiced by Cynthia Farrell, who has also voiced characters in the video game Batman: Dark Tomorrow.

Character history

Background

Catalina, born of mixed Dominican and Colombian descent, is the cousin of Mexican-American Varrios Los Aztecas leader Cesar Vialpando. She alludes to being adopted and neglected by her foster father, who by contrast spoiled his biological son. Catalina's hideout in Fern Ridge has a row of graves nearby, which some say are the graves of former boyfriends that she killed.

Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas

Catalina met Carl Johnson in 1992, a friend of Cesar's, while she was living in Fern Ridge, San Andreas. Catalina fell in love with Carl, which he only reciprocated because he was intimidated by her. They committed four robberies across Red County, during which Catalina became frustrated with Carl because he was more focused on money; Carl, in exile from his hometown of Los Santos, was at the mercy of corrupt LSPD officer Frank Tenpenny who expected him to pay for 3 tons of marijuana to ultimately frame a District Attorney, though Catalina was unaware of any of this.

During their string of robberies, Catalina met Claude and quickly began a relationship with him. She became jealous after catching Carl at a street race, and challenged him to race Claude. Carl won that race, though Claude was "satisfying (Catalina) fully" while driving. Carl wins a garage property in Doherty, San Fierro from Claude, and although Carl received the property in horrible condition and essentially abandoned, he and his associates eventually turned it into a successful business. Over the next few months, Catalina called Carl's cell phone repeatedly to torment him.

Mid-to-late 90s

For the next nine years, Catalina and Claude traveled through Texas and New Mexico on a string of robberies. The couple took a commercial flight in October 2001 to Liberty City from "one of those funny towns down south with a Spanish name, Los Something or other, or San Somebody" (likely not Los Santos or San Fierro - in theory they would have been worth mentioning because they are big cities, and they had yet to be thought up by Rockstar Games when Grand Theft Auto III was made).

Grand Theft Auto III

During a bank robbery in Liberty City, Catalina betrays Claude and shoots him. While Catalina immediately begins a new relationship with Miguel (head of the Colombian Cartel), Claude is apprehended by police - ironically, the Cartel unwittingly halted Claude's convoy to kidnap the Old Oriental Gentleman, giving him and 8-Ball the perfect opportunity to escape.

With her new leadership position in the Cartel, Catalina drove the increased production of their designer drug SPANK, which had been in production since 1998 or earlier but only recently skyrocketed in popularity under her direction. Claude and 8-Ball, employed by Salvatore Leone, sunk the Cartel's SPANK-producing freighter. Catalina brokered a truce with the Leones that included Salvatore setting a death trap for Claude. Salvatore's girlfriend, Maria Latore, left Salvatore to help Claude escape alive.

Claude immediately took up work with the Yakuza and killed Salvatore Leone. The Yakuza began a direct war with the Cartel after they allegedly killed] Kenji Kasen (though it was actually a false-flag operation, performed by Claude for Donald Love).

Donald Love (also an enemy of the Cartel) sent Claude to collect an unknown, valuable package that was stolen by Catalina's men. Claude confronted Catalina and Miguel in person, for the first time since she betrayed him, at the Fort Staunton construction site. After Miguel surrenders the package to Claude, Catalina shoots Miguel in the back and escapes. Asuka Kasen unwittingly tortures Miguel in retribution for her brother's death, while directing Claude to further attack the Cartel.

Catalina kills Asuka and Miguel, kidnaps Maria Latore and demands $500,000 from Claude for her safe return. She and Claude confront each other a third time at the Cartel Mansion, where she instead escapes with Maria and tries to have Claude killed. Claude chases their helicopter to Cochrane Dam, where he rescues Maria and kills Catalina.

Personality

Catalina is portrayed as a reckless and extremely aggressive psychotic who turns on even close partners if they cease to be useful to her (as seen with Carl Johnson, Claude and Miguel). Much more of Catalina's psyche is brought to light during her conversations with Carl Johnson, frequently shooting bystanders during heists and referencing cannibalism. She also suffers from a persecution complex, possibly due to cruel treatment by her stepfather as a child, telling Johnson that "They had to die because YOU were slow and stupid, like a big fat brat that eats chocolates while his father gives nothing to his step daughter but stale bread!" She is supposedly based on Caterina Sforza, an Italian noblewoman who lived during the Renaissance.

  • Asuka Kasen (killed to kidnap Maria and for disrupting Cartel activities)

Trivia

  • Catalina is the only female antagonist in the Grand Theft Auto series.
  • Catalina's top is noticeably different from the original GTA III PS2 release than the later GTA III releases. In the PC version she has a lock of hair on her forehead and a ponytail. In the Xbox version she is also wearing a pink tube top.
  • Her surname is never revealed, although being Cesar Vialpando's cousin, there is nothing to suggest her last name is Vialpando.
  • She is the only main antagonist in the GTA III Era to appear in more than one game.
