Non-Playable Characters (NPCs) | ||
Character Type | Description | List |
Antagonist |
The Antagonist is the main enemy of the protagonist, who generally makes the life of the protagonist difficult. An example of an antagonist is Frank Tenpenny from GTA San Andreas. |
Antagonists |
Main Characters |
Main Characters are those that figure prominently in the game, typically giving the protagonists missions or otherwise playing an important role. Lance Vance, for example, was one of the main characters in GTA Vice City despite not giving the protagonist any missions. |

Supporting Characters |
Supporting Characters are those that do not play a large role in the GTA games but do have an impact on the storyline. For example, Earnest Kelly in GTA Vice City gave the protagonist (Tommy Vercetti) missions but was not a key character throughout the game. His role, however, becomes particularly important when Tommy attempts to give Sonny Forelli counterfeit money, provided by Kelly. |

Minor Characters |
Minor Characters are characters who play minor roles in GTA games while standing out from pedestrians (either by appearance or by name). One example is Curly Bob from GTA III, a bartender at Luigi's Sex Club 7 who appears in one mission. |

Random Characters / Strangers and Freaks |
Random Characters are minor characters that appear at random locations throughout the city, giving the protagonist missions. Random Characters have only appeared in Grand Theft Auto IV, The Lost and Damned, Chinatown Wars, and The Ballad of Gay Tony. In Grand Theft Auto V they are called Strangers and Freaks, similar to Red Dead Redemption. |

Gang Members |
Gang members are characters affiliated with street gangs, criminal organizations, and outlaw motorcycle clubs. The player can operate as an agent or an enemy of these gangs... or both. |
Category:Characters |
Law Enforcement Officers |
Law enforcement officers are characters who enforce the laws and prevent crime in the GTA series. Officers can either be with the police, FBI, NOOSE, SWAT, or the military. Their goal is to make life difficult for the player. |
Category:Characters |
Pedestrians |
Pedestrians are a category of characters including both pedestrians and motorists. These characters are generic types that appear throughout the game walking or driving around the city. Pedestrians tend to have limited dialogue and play no essential role in the games. It should also be noted that some minor characters have their appearance derived from pedestrian models, although they are not the same character. For example, Mrs. Chonks from GTA III shares a model with a pedestrian. |

Street Criminals |
Street Criminals are pedestrians that steal vehicles and often pick-pocket other pedestrians. They've featured in the series since Grand Theft Auto 2 and create a more replete environment in the city. |

Multiplayer Characters |
Multiplayer characters are those the player can control whilst in multiplayer mode. During missions, some multiplayer characters also appear as minor characters like Mona Lott in GTA Liberty City Stories. |
Category:Characters |
Mentioned Characters |
Mentioned Characters are characters mentioned during game dialogue or on promotional websites for GTA games but are not seen during the games themselves. An example being Moweesha, who is mentioned on the GTA Vice City website. These also include people who appear on radio stations, except for DJs and hosts, such as Reed Tucker from GTA III's Chatterbox FM. |

Radio Personalities |
Radio Personalities are characters who host radio stations or programmes in the GTA games. An example is Lazlow, who has appeared as a DJ (for Chatterbox FM and V-Rock), a presenter (for Entertaining America on WCTR and Chatterbox on LCFR), and a radio intern (on V-Rock). |

Fictional Characters |
Fictional Characters are characters who are fictional within the GTA universe itself. An example is Herbie, the astral-goat of The Truth, or Darth Vader, a character in Star Wars, who is frequently mentioned by MC Codebreaker on MSX FM. |
Category:Characters |
Deleted Characters |
Deleted Characters are characters who were set to appear in GTA games but were removed before the final version of the game. An example being Darkel and Curtly, both of whom were removed from GTA III. |

By Name
For a list of all characters from the GTA series listed by surname, see Characters by Surname. Due to the large number of characters in the series, that article is split into the following sections:
For a list of gangsters in the GTA series, see Category:Gangsters.
For a list of characters in the 3D Universe, see Characters in 3D Universe.
For a list of characters who die in the 3D Universe, see Character Deaths in 3D Universe.
