Morality choices are points in "Grand Theft Auto IV" in which the protagonist Niko Bellic can make decisions that may or may not affect the plot of the game.

Overview

The only game to have this feature is GTA IV. When the player comes to a morality choice, he/she is given two options to choose to move along the game. Usually, depending on the decision made, the plot of the game may be affected, and the reward received varies.

Most of these morality choices come at the end of some missions, and the decision made is to kill or spare an enemy. Sometimes, if these enemies are spared, they will come back at some point later in the game as Random Characters. When the player has to choose the fate of an enemy, his arrow on top and his blip on the radar will flash between blue and red, and he will usually be begging for his life to Niko. Two occassions give the player not the opportunity to decide wether to kill an enemy or not, but to decide who to kill between two characters, being mandatory to kill someone this time, but with the chance to pick.

The ending of the game, a key element of the plot, is decided by the player depending on which mission he decides to do. The two missions appear on the radar and the player decides which to go to.

Morality choices in GTA IV

Life or death scenario

Mission Target Reward for sparing Description
Ivan the Not So Terrible Ivan Bytchkov Random encounter Ivan is left hanging on a ledge. Niko can step on his hand so he falls to the floor to kill him, or help him up to spare him.
Ruff Rider Cherise Glover Random encounter Cherise and Jayvon Simson are found by Niko. Jayvon escapes in a motorbike and Niko has to quickly decide between shooting Cherise to kill her or get on a bike to chase Jayvon and let Cherise alive.
Holland Nights Clarence Little Random encounter Clarence is cornered on the roof of a complex. Niko can shoot him to kill him or just walk away to spare him.
Portrait of a Killer Gunman Nothing There are a lot of gunmen in the parking lot that have to be killed. One of these, usually the one near the corner next to Dukes Boulevard, will drop his weapon and raise his hands if you kill all of the other gunmen. Niko can shoot him to kill him or just walk away to spare him. This doesn't have any repercutions later in the game and is probably just a way to add a special touch to the mission.
Late Checkout Diamond dealer Nothing The first diamond dealer to kill (he looks like a rabbi) is in the kitchen. If you kill everyone in the floor and in the kitchen but him and you get close to him, he will drop his weapon and raise his hands. Niko can shoot him to kill him or just walk away to spare him. This doesn't have any repercutions later in the game and is probably just a way to add a special touch to the mission.
That Special Someone Darko Brevic Nothing Darko is brought to the airport and in front of Niko with his hands handcuffed. Niko can shoot him to kill him or just walk away to spare him.

The Holland Play Playboy X Playboy X's Penthouse and Dwayne's friendship After the first part of the mission, in which Playboy X tells Niko to kill Dwayne, Niko will receive phone calls from Playboy and Dwayne, then the two appear on the radar so Niko can decide who to kill.
