Jimmy Hernandez was born in an unknown location, and, at some point prior to 1992, joined the Los Santos Police Department in 1989. His biggest case, prior to joining C.R.A.S.H., was a domestic violence case where a man was beating up his wife, a drug addict who nearly allowed their child to starve. Hernandez was then transferred to C.R.A.S.H. as an undercover officer to investigate fellow officers Frank Tenpenny, the leader of C.R.A.S.H., and Eddie Pulaski, corrupt officers who had been taking the law into their own hands and encouraging gang violence in Los Santos' poorer neighbourhoods, after they received information from C.R.A.S.H. officer Ralph Pendelbury about their activities. Hernandez, however, tells Tenpenny and Pulaski that he realised that the only crime in Los Santos was gang crime and joined C.R.A.S.H.. Hernandez, however, almost loses his chance to work in C.R.A.S.H. when talking to Tenpenny and Pulaski about his past three years of service. Tenpenny then orders him to get out of their car in East Los Santos. Hernandez, however, is later accepted back and the corrupt Tenpenny and Pulaski quickly initiate him into their criminal activities after Hernandez told them he was prepared to do whatever it took to reduce the crime in the city. The three then drive to meet Pendelbury, who is badly beaten by Pulaski before being killed by a reluctant Hernandez, who was being held at gunpoint by Tenpenny.

Jimmy Hernandez, alongside Tenpenny and Pulaski, are first seen arresting Carl Johnson in Ganton on his return to Los Santos from Liberty City for his mothers funeral. The three then drive Johnson around the city's poorer neighbourhoods and hand him the gun that Hernandez had used to kill Pendelbury ten minutes previously, thus giving them leverage over Johnson. Character history

Before 1992

Hernandez was born in an unknown location, and, at some point prior to 1992, joined the Los Santos Police Department in 1989. His biggest case, prior to joining C.R.A.S.H., was a domestic violence case where a man was beating up his wife, a drug addict who nearly allowed their child to starve. Hernandez was then transferred to C.R.A.S.H. as an undercover officer to investigate fellow officers Tenpenny and Pulaski who had been taking the law into their own hands and encouraging gang violence in Los Santos' poorer neighbourhoods, after they received information from C.R.A.S.H. officer Ralph Pendelbury about their activities. Hernandez, however, tells Tenpenny and Pulaski that he realized that the only crime in Los Santos was gang crime and joined C.R.A.S.H. for the same.

Life with Carl Johnson

Hernandez, alongside Tenpenny and Pulaski, is first seen arresting protagonist Carl "CJ" Johnson in Ganton on his return to Los Santos from Liberty City for his mother Beverly's funeral. The three then drive Carl around the city's poorer neighbourhoods and hand him the gun that Hernandez had used to kill Pendelbury ten minutes previously, thus giving them leverage over Carl. The three then throw him from their moving police car, leaving him in Jefferson, a part of the city controlled by Carl's gang rivals, the Ballas, and return to the scene of Pendelbury's murder. Hernandez continues to work with Tenpenny and Pulaski, and later phones Carl to remind him not to leave the city and that the officers are watching him.

Tenpenny and Pulaski later arrive at a house in Idlewood belonging to high-ranking Grove Street Families member Melvin "Big Smoke" Harris on two separate occasions, but without Hernandez, as they had become aware of Smoke and high-ranking Grove Street Families member Lance "Ryder" Wilson's involvement in Beverly's death and their links to the Ballas, Los Santos Vagos and San Fierro Rifa. Hernandez, however, continues to follow them to Ryder's house in Grove Street, where Tenpenny tells Ryder and Carl about an incoming train coming to the city loaded with weapons, which is later attacked by the duo.

Hernandez meets Johnson while with Tenpenny and Pulaski again when Tenpenny orders Carl to kill a 'cop killing' Los Santos Vagos gangster and of a deal between the Ballas and Russian Mafia, which Carl later interupts. Carl is later involved in a gang shoot-out between the Ballas and Grove Street Families in Mulholland Intersection, after witnessing Tenpenny, Pulaski, Smoke and Ryder with the green Sabre used in Beverly's murder. Carl and his brother, Grove Street Families leader Sean "Sweet" Johnson, who was shot during the shoot-out, are both arrested by the Los Santos Police Department when they ambush the area.

Badlands, San Fierro and Las Venturas

Sweet is taken 'upstate' by the police but Carl, also present at the shoot-out, is taken by Tenpenny, Pulaski and Hernandez to Angel Pine in Whetstone. Tenpenny and Pulaski tell Johnson of an ex-police officer being protected by the FBI as he is going to give states evidence against the two, although Hernandez is not mentioned. Hernandez, during this conversation, is urinating up a tree, suggesting that Tenpenny and Pulaski did not trust him. Carl, despite being left with no weapons, manages to kill the ex-police officer hiding on Mount Chiliad and photograph his corpse.

Tenpenny and Pulaski later appear at Carl's newfound garage in Doherty, San Fierro, telling him to follow and kill a journalist and reporter looking into their activities. Hernandez, again, did not travel with them and was not mentioned as being investigated. Tenpenny, Pulaski and Hernandez continue their work in Los Santos as police officers and attempt to cover up their criminal activities. Tenpenny and Pulaski later meet Carl at a house in Prickle Pine, Las Venturas where Tenpenny tells him that the 'gig is nearly up'. They have Carl retrieve a dossier and kill a DEA and an FBI agent during their meeting in Aldea Malvada, a ghost town, which he does. Pulaski, during this meeting, tells Tenpenny that Hernandez has 'been gone too long', indicating that he is giving evidence against the two to internal affairs.

Death and legacy

Jimmy Hernandez, on the ground, knocked out, after being hit over the head with a shovel by Frank Tenpenny during High Noon.

Hernandez later travels with Tenpenny and Pulaski to the ghost town Las Brujas to meet Carl for collecting the dossier he had taken from the DEA and FBI agent. Hernandez holds Carl at gunpoint as Pulaski collects the dossier but is then hit on the head with a shovel by Tenpenny for giving evidence against the two to internal affairs, confirming their earlier suspicions. Hernandez lays on the ground injured and, after Tenpenny had left and Pulaski was distracted, attempted to save Carl's life by rushing Pulaski, who was holding Carl at gun point. Pulaski, however, quickly turns around and shoots Hernandez, who dies.

Hernandez' actions, however, allow Carl to escape and kill Pulaski. The evidence Hernandez gave to internal affairs is later used to arrest Tenpenny. The district attorney puts both Tenpenny and Pulaski, who was tried in absentia, on trial for racketeering, corruption, narcotics and sexual assault. The case, however, is dismissed due to a lack of evidence. A television reporter, during the trial, reveals that the authorities believe that Hernandez was killed for giving information to internal affairs. Carl, however, is involved in a long pursuit of Tenpenny, which resulted in his death after driving a fire truck over a bridge into Grove Street.
