Niko Bellic

Niko Bellic is the protagonist of Grand Theft Auto IV. He has a strong Eastern European accent. Niko is of Serbian descent, and has previously fought in the Bosnian War. In fact, one of the reasons he came to Liberty City was to find Darko Brevic, a man who betrayed Niko's army unit during the war. He lived with his mother and brother, the latter of whom was killed during the breakout of the war in Bosnia. Combined with the death of several of his other friends in the Balkan conflict of the 1990's, Niko has become a cynical individual.

Born in 1978, and at 30 years old (as made evident by his "Love Meet" profile and name SweetBellic or LibertyBellic), Niko travels to Liberty City enticed by the promise of a new, glamorous life with women, money, and cars, as promised to Niko by his cousin Roman, only to be disappointed by his lies - at which point the player of GTA IV takes control.

Niko Bellic's life in Serbia was often miserable, but he still enjoy reminiscing about the times when his father was too drunk to beat them both. On a second attempt at the mission Taking in the Trash, alternative dialogue between Niko and Lucas has Niko telling Lucas that his childhood ambition was to be an astronaut when he complains about the task he was chosen to perform. In 1993, Roman's mother saved up her money to send Roman off to Liberty City and she offered Niko some cash to leave with his cousin, but he turned down the offer to fight on the Serbian side in the Bosnian War, a choice he would later regret. Sometime in 1998, after the war ended, while scouting a village with his war buddies, the unit was betrayed and killed, and only 3 people escaped alive: Niko, Florian Cravic and Darko Brevic. Knowing one of the two betrayed his army unit, Niko set out to look for the one who sold him and his buddies out. It was around this time he turned to a life of crime against his will. Between 1998 and 2008, Niko became involved in various illegal enterprises, all the while searching for the one who betrayed his buddies. He worked for a brief period for the Russian mobster Rodislav Bulgarin, but when the boat sank and Bulgarian blamed him, Niko fled. In early-mid 2008, Roman contacted Niko about the great life that he was living in Liberty City. Niko had also got wind that Florian Cravic, one of the possible traitors, was living in Liberty City. And thus he headed for the United States, chartering a boat, the Platypus to take him there.

Niko was voiced by Michael Hollick.
