The Commonwealth of Puerto Rico is an unincorporated territory of the United States of America.

In November of 2012, the citizens of Puerto Rico voted on a non-binding referendum regarding its political status. The first question of the referendum asked voters if they wish to maintain its present status as an United States territory, of which 54% of voters said no. Regardless of how the first question was answered, the second question asked voters for their preference among three non-territorial alternatives: US statehood, independence from the US, or to become a sovereign free state associated with the US. 61% of the voters voted in favor of seeking US statehood while only 5% of voters favored becoming an independent nation.
