The Shotgun is a weapon tier featured in all Grand Theft Auto games. It consists of powerful weapons that take both hands to use (with the Sawn-off shotgun making an exception), but has a very short-range and useless at long-range. Wielding it limits mobility - the player character is not capable of sprinting and, in some games, stands still when targeting. In all GTA Eras, if the player shoots a pedestrian with a shotgun, this causes him/her to be blasted into the ground, and this can be really effective by shooting a moving vehicle, usually blowing it up by two or three bullets. However, during Vigilante missions, if the suspects wield a shotgun and he/she will successfully blast the player the the ground, the player will become defenseless, even when wearing a Body Armor. In Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas and GTA IV Era games, the player doesn't get knocked down by a shotgun blast but can still suffer damage. By getting in a Police car, the player receives 5 Shotgun shells, and the shotgun will be added to the player's weapon slot, if the player doesn't have one.
