Tommy Vercetti is a 35 year old character in the 3D Universe appearing as the protagonist of Grand Theft Auto: Vice City in 1986 and mentioned in The Introduction, a prequel of Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas set in 1992. He is a former member of the Forelli Family and the leader of the Vercetti Gang, based out of Vice City.

Tommy Vercetti is the protagonist and playable character of Grand Theft Auto: Vice City. He was voiced by Ray Liotta.
Tommy Vercetti is voiced by Ray Liotta, who has also starred in the blockbuster film Goodfellas.

Background
Character history
Tommy was born in Liberty City in 1949 (Age 60 in 2009). Vercetti's father worked all his life in a printing shop, and years later Tommy had fond childhood memories of helping his father clean the rollers. He wanted to follow his father in the family business, but he lived a different life, instead becaming a criminal in the employment of the Forelli Family.
Early life
Tommy Vercetti was born around 1951 and is thirty-five years old during the events of the game. He was born in Liberty City and, at a young age, began helping his father at a printing shop cleaning rollers. Vercetti had wanted to follow in his father's footsteps, but "lived a different life", at some point joining the Forelli Family in the 1960s. He continued to work with the Forelli Family until 1971, when he was convicted of eleven counts of manslaughter in Harwood, later gaining the name "The Harwood Butcher". This was an attempted ambush, planned by Sonny Forelli, although Tommy survived. His connections with the Forelli Family ensured he was spared the death penalty and a life sentence. Tommy remained in prison for fifteen years, not informing the LCPD of any Forelli Family secrets.

Tommy went to prison in Liberty City in 1971 for multiple counts of homicide in the district of Harwood, earning him the nickname "The Harwood Butcher." However, Sonny Forelli, a mob boss, called in favors and pulled strings, so Tommy was released 15 years later. That year Sonny sent him to Vice City. There, Vercetti was supposed to be the Forelli's representative in a drug deal and expand their empire "down south"; however, the drug deal was ambushed by hitmen for drug lord Ricardo Diaz. Tommy worked for several people including Juan Garcia Cortez and Ricardo Diaz himself to find out who was behind the ambush, and to get the drugs back. Tommy and Lance Vance finally discover that Diaz was actually behind the ambush; and Lance, hungry to avenge his brother's death, attempts to kill Diaz. He fails, however, and is captured by Diaz's Gang members, taken to the junkyard, and eventually rescued by Tommy. This forces them to raid Diaz's mansion and kill Ricardo. Tommy took over the mansion and started his own gang, the Vercetti Gang. He bought properties and pulled several jobs: bank heists, carjacking, taxi firms and films. The Vercetti gang was known to rule the Vice City underworld to at least 1992, as witnessed in Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas.
1986
In 1986, he was released from prison after Sonny Forelli "pulled" some strings. Forelli decides to send Tommy to Vice City, realizing that he is too well known in Liberty City. Sonny, wanting to become involved in the narcotics trade, decides to send Tommy with some money and to allow him to establish a drug cartel for the Forelli's. Tommy flies to Vice City along with Harry and Lee, meeting Ken Rosenberg at Escobar International Airport. The drug deal with the Vance Crime Family is ambushed by Ricardo Diaz' men, something Tommy only later discovers. Tommy, Rosenberg, and Lance Vance (of the Vance Crime Family) escape.

Sonny Forelli, angered by the limited attention Tommy had given him, decided to send hitmen to raid Tommy's businesses; however, Tommy killed them all. Sonny was angered and decided to come to Vice City himself to face Tommy one-on-one. It was revealed that the incident which caused Tommy's imprisonment was an ambush orchestrated by Sonny Forelli; and that Lance Vance betrayed Tommy. Eventually a gunfight broke out inside Vercetti Estate, and both Sonny and Lance were killed.
Tommy informs Sonny of the ambush and is reminded that Sonny is 'not a guy to be screwed with'. Tommy, looking to get Sonny's money back, begins to work for various criminals around the city to gain money and revenge. He initially works for Rosenberg, causing riots and intimidating jurors, before working for Juan Cortez, an intermediary for the drug deal, who begins to look into the ambush for Tommy. Meanwhile, he has Tommy steal missile technology chips and kill Gonzalez, who had talked about the deal.

When Ken Rosenberg was released from drug rehabilitation, Tommy severed all connections with Ken; and in 1991 he tried contacting Tommy, but was unsuccessful.
Cortez, believing that Ricardo Diaz was responsible for the ambush, gets Tommy in contact with Diaz to observe him and act as his protection in a deal with the Cubans. The Haitians, arch enemies of the Cubans, attempt to ambush the deal, but are thwarted by Tommy and Lance. Diaz, seeing potential in Tommy and having worked with Lance before, hires them to, amongst other things, kill gang members stealing some of his drugs and steal the "fastest boat" in the city, in order to purchase drugs from a dealer on a boat. Lance attempts to kill Diaz in revenge for the death of his brother, but is captured and heavily injured, later being freed by Vercetti from the Little Haiti City Scrap. The two later go on to extract revenge for the ambush, killing Diaz in his mansion.

Character Personality
The death of Ricardo Diaz brings change to Vice City, allowing Tommy and Lance to step in and continue the protection ring established by Diaz. Tommy, however, begins to look beyond the protection ring and purchases a number of businesses around the city, most prominently the Malibu Club, the Cherry Popper Ice Cream Factory (used to sell drugs), Films and the Print Works. After purchasing each business, Tommy helps establish them in the city. During this time, Tommy also begins to work for a number of smaller time criminals in the city, including the Cuban leader Umberto Robina and the Haitian leader Auntie Poulet (due to her drugging him), helping both sides attack the other. He also works for Avery Carrington (helping his real estate business), Phil Cassidy (helping his gun running business), Mr. Black (helping to kill a number of people), Mitch Baker to retrieve his stolen motorcycle, and Kent Paul and Love Fist to stop a psychopathic fan. Tommy also went on to help Juan Cortez escape the city when the French government decides to assault his yacht.
Throughout the game, Tommy Vercetti is shown as being an intelligent, but temperamental man, getting angry with people very easily and he is constantly shown to be very violent (for example, Tommy brutally beating Leo Teal to death for ambushing his drug deal and Tommy roughing up and beating Kent Paul whenever he needs to confirm a rumor).

However, Tommy also shows several signs of being a caring man. One example is his friendship with Earnest Kelly. Earnest is an old man who worked the Vice City Print Works, whom Tommy met after buying the Print Works. Tommy sees Earnest as a father figure; when Tommy was a child, his dad used to work with printing presses, and Tommy still has fond memories of helping his dad clean the rollers of his printing machines.
Sonny Forelli, growing restless and impatient, sends his own men to collect some of 'his' money from Tommy. Tommy kills the collectors, although not in time to prevent Earnest Kelly, the man running the printers and whom Tommy sees as a father figure, from being brutally beaten up. Tommy decides to give Sonny fake money printed at the Print Works. Tommy meets Sonny in person at his estate, with Sonny informing him that the Harwood incident was an ambush and also telling him that Lance was now sided with him. A gun battle ensues, with Tommy killing both Lance and Sonny. Following their deaths, Tommy and Ken run the crime family without pressure from the Forellis.

Despite that, Tommy is shown as a ruthless killer, an example being his work for Mr. Black since Black ordered Tommy to kill people in several contract killings and Tommy just complied because he was being paid to do it. The only occasion in which Tommy shows regret for killing someone was when he killed his former associate Lance Vance after Lance sided with Sonny Forelli to kill Tommy at Vercetti Estate.
Life after 1986
Tommy Vercetti continued to run the criminal underworld of Vice City until at least 1992, although his relationship with Ken Rosenberg became increasingly strained due to Rosenberg's cocaine addiction. Tommy eventually sends Ken into rehab at the Fort Carson Medical Center in Fort Carson, San Andreas, later refusing to answer his telephone calls. Thus nobody knows his later fate. Tommy is also mentioned by Kent Paul on his website in 2002 stating "see, Tom, I didn't mention your name, nowhere. Maybe you won't get us killed now, okay?" Since this sentence is apparently directed at Tommy himself, it can be easily determined he is still alive in 2002.

Vercetti's Dealings
Personality
Other than Tommy's main activity of getting back Sonny's money, Tommy pulled off several other jobs with other people to gain popularity with other gangs and also to boost his assets when he starts buying property. Among those dealings are:
Tommy Vercetti is depicted as both intelligent but temperamental, easily angered and quick to resort to violence, much like Toni Cipriani. He has no hesitation about killing, though many of his victims are in turn trying to kill Tommy as well, or have done something that requires them to be killed. The story does not require Tommy to kill innocent people. Tommy does also show a softer side as seen with his relations with Mercedes Cortez and Earnest Kelly, the latter whom he views as a father figure due to his childhood memories of working with his father at a printworks.

Avery Carrington
Appearance
In order to start up on real estate, Tommy worked with Avery Carrington to learn more about real estate. Tommy pulled off jobs for Avery which involved helping Avery obtain more property around Vice City, like:
Tommy Vercetti is a tall, reasonably muscular Italian-American man in his mid-thirties. He has slicked back dark brown hair, light skin and a light five'O clock shadow. Tommy's usual outfit consists of a light blue Hawaiian shirt, stonewashed blue jeans, and white sneakers (resemble of Adidas Superstar). When dealing with more important business, Tommy wears a blue soirée suit fitting the fashion of the mid-80s.
* Killing Avery's main rival in Vice City real estate.
* Blowing up a building in construction so Avery can buy out the lot in which it's being built.
* Starting a gang war between the Cubans and the Haitians to reduce real estate prices.

Umberto Robina
Inspiration
To boost his popularity with other gangs, Tommy worked for the Cuban leader, Umberto Robina. Pulling off jobs to weaken Umberto's rival gang, The Haitians, jobs like:
Tommy Vercetti shows many characteristics in common with Tony Montana, a drug lord from the film Scarface. The two both end up in exile, both arrive to the city in Hawaiian shirts, both rise to power in Miami/Vice City using great amounts of violence, both build an empire from a large estate and mansion, both have short tempers and are prone to violence, both work as contract killers, and both killed their collaborators and took their ex-bosses' empires. The interior of the Vercetti Estate is even modeled after Montana's mansion. There are, however, key differences, most notably that Tommy did not become addicted to his own narcotics and that Tommy survived the shoot out in his mansion, as opposed to Montana who was killed.
* Raiding a Haitian drug storage.
* Busting a Haitian drug deal with the Sharks.
* Blowing up the Haitian's drug plant.

Mr. Black
Tommy Vercetti also bears some resemblance to 'Mr. Blonde' from the film Reservoir Dogs, played by Michael Madsen who also voiced Toni Cipriani in Grand Theft Auto III. The film sees 'Mr. Blonde' released from prison after loyally doing time for his crime family, as Tommy did after the "Harwood Incident" . Tommy later performs contract killings for a 'Mr. Black", whilst he is referred to as 'Mr. Teal' (a reference to the then deceased Leo Teal and Reservoir Dogs).
To earn extra cash, Tommy worked as a payphone hitman for Mr. Black, assassinating people like:
* Carl Pearson, works as a pizza delivery man.
* Mrs. Dawson
* Mike Griffin, Franco Carter, Nick Kong, Dick Tanner, Marcus Hammond and Charlie Dilson, European bank robbers
* A business man bringing evidence against Mr. Black's customer in Escobar International Airport.
* FBI agents and Shark members sealing a deal that would give the FBI evidence against Mr. Black's employer.

Phil Cassidy
Notable crimes committed by Tommy
In order to get extreme firepower, Tommy works for Phil Cassidy by:
* Killed eleven men in Harwood, Liberty City and was imprisoned for fifteen years.
* Killing Phil's rival at gun running, a man called Pedro Garcia and stealing his weapon shipment.
* Killed the Sharks gang members in their mansion with Lance Vance.
* Saving Phil's life when he accidentally blows off his own arm by standing too close to a homemade Boomshine bomb.
* Stole a tank from a military convoy.
* Assaulted and destroyed a Haitian drug factory with Rico.
* Assaulted Ricardo Diaz's mansion and then killed Ricardo Diaz with Lance Vance.
* Smashed 5 store owners windows.
* Stole cop uniforms with Lance Vance and planted a bomb in the Tarbrush Cafe.
* Robbed the El Banco Corrupto Grande along side Phil Cassidy (Gun Expert), Cam Jones (Safe Cracker), and Hilary King (Getaway Driver).
* Killed Lance Vance and Sonny Forelli while taking control of Vice City with his lawyer Ken Rosenberg.

Relation to Tony Montana
VCBI Record
Tommy Vercetti, in several ways, exhibits characteristics of fictional drug lord Tony Montana from the 1983 film Scarface. This coincides with the heavy themes and appearance of the movie that has been implemented into Vice City. Among these characteristics, his exile from his old home (Liberty City), his rise to power (acquiring property and wealth in the city, and a mansion which also sports an interior similar to that of Montana’s mansion), and his rather short-tempered behavior. Tommy is also a hired assassin, has killed his own collaborators (Lance Vance), took over his temporary boss’s business (Ricardo Diaz) and rebelled against his former leader (Sonny Forelli), as Tony Montana had. The only notable differences are that Montana consumed his own narcotics to the point of severe addiction, a fatal flaw that Vercetti is not depicted to have. Rosenberg tries to get in touch with his old boss in "The Introduction" prequel machinima film in order to find work, only to be turned away several times by one of Vercetti’s associates, as Vercetti has apparently terminated his “employment” due to his cocaine addiction and propensity for liability. Another notable difference is that  the final gunfight in Montana’s mansion sees Montana eventually killed, whereas Tommy manages to single-handedly take down his captors and survive. The 'alternate outcome' of Tony surviving the final battle at the mansion and then escaping is the basis for the 2007 Scarface: The World is Yours video game.
The Vice City Bureau of Investigation briefly mentions Vercetti despite being a major character in the game.
* Who is this guy? I've got a call into the Parole Board in Liberty. Seems he was in prison up there.

Trivia
* Tommy Vercetti is the oldest protagonist of the 3D Universe, and the third oldest of the series, behind Michael De Santa and Trevor Phillips, who are both 48 during the events of Grand Theft Auto V (set in 2013).
* Tommy and Trevor Philips are the only protagonists to be present for the death of another protagonist in a non-determinant situation. (Tommy witnessed Victor Vance get gunned down during a deal, and Trevor stomped Johnny Klebitz to death)
* Mercedes Cortez, the daughter of Colonel Juan Garcia Cortez, was conceived as a love interest for Tommy, but Rockstar Games removed this subplot during development. There is a lot of deleted dialogue that involves the relationship between the two.
* A Tommy Vercetti action figure can be located in the Zero RC shop in San Fierro in GTA San Andreas, along with a Lance Vance, James Earl Cash, and Piggsy figure.
* An easter egg in Grand Theft Auto IV suggests that Tommy Vercetti, along with the other GTA III Era protagonists, are dead as of 2008. However, GTA IV does not share a canon with the GTA III Era. The egg likely refers to the fact that they will not be featured in any future games.
* Kent Paul mentioned Tommy on his website with a phrase: "see, Tom, I didn't mention your name, nowhere. Maybe you won't get us killed now, okay?". It possibly means that he was alive in 2002.
* Tommy is mentioned only once in GTA San Andreas, during "The Meat Business", where Ken mistakenly calls Carl "Tommy", to which Carl rudely responds "Who the fuck is Tommy?".
* In the official Grand Theft Auto: Vice City strategy guide, it is stated that he is 35 years old during the events of Vice City, making his year of birth 1950/1951.
* Tommy is shown to like his Street Outfit, as he got angry when Ken Rosenberg told him to change into a Soiree Outfit before attending Colonel Juan Garcia Cortez's Party in the mission The Party.
* Tommy wears what appears to be a pearl necklace and a gold watch.
* Tommy has committed the most named murders in the GTA III Era, with a body count of 26 (including optional murders). In the entire series, Tommy commits the second most murders, only beaten by GTA IV protagonist Niko Bellic, who has 50.
* Tommy kills three of Victor Vance's former employers. (Gonzalez, Ricardo Diaz, and Lance Vance).
* In DRIV3R, a parody of GTA Vice City there are ten hidden enemies named "Timmy Vermicelli" which can be murdered by the player. Being a parody, the Timmy Vermicellis are intentionally poorly rendered and bear resemblances to Tommy Vercetti, most notably with the Hawaiian shirt, necklace, and the similar location of each setting (Vice City being based of Miami, which is one of the three cities Driv3r takes place in). Timmy Vermicelli also wears waterwings/arm bands, a reference to the lack of swimming in pre-GTA San Andreas games.
* Tommy Vercetti is portrayed as being a highly successful protagonist throughout and at the end of the game. He has executed a major bank heist, crashed numerous drug deals and stolen their merchandise, survived large scale shootouts, owns businesses and real estate throughout Vice City (He owns 17 buildings, 9 of which are assets, including the Vercetti Estate), and is the leader of Vice City's most powerful gang. He is one of the most successful protagonists in the series' history, alongside Carl Johnson and Victor Vance, although the latter's is short-lived.
* Vercetti is also the only verbal protagonist that doesn't say "fuck" in the series (despite the word appearing in a movie poster inside a small house in Phil Cassidy's area in Little Haiti).

Murders committed
; Prior to the events of GTA VC
* Eleven unnamed men (<small>killed during a shootout after they ambushed him when he was sent to kill one person</small>)

Tommy also bears some resemblance to Michael Madsen's character 'Mr. Blonde' in the Quentin Tarantino film Reservoir Dogs. This is a possible explanation for the reason that his contact for the payphone assassination missions is called 'Mr. Black' and his reference to Tommy as 'Mr. Teal'. Also, it should be noted that at the beginning of Reservoir Dogs, it is stated that Mr. Blonde (real name Vic Vega) has just been released from prison after showing his loyalty by doing time for the family, much like Tommy.
; During the events of GTA VC
* Leo Teal (<small>killed due to possible links to the ambushed drug deal</small>)

Tommy Vercetti is voiced by Ray Liotta, who has also starred in the blockbuster film Goodfellas.

Character history

Early life

Tommy Vercetti was born around 1951 and is thirty-five years old[1] during the events of the game.

1986

In 1986, he was released from prison after Sonny Forelli "pulled" some strings. Forelli decides to send Tommy to Vice City, realizing that he is too well known in Liberty City.[2] Sonny, wanting to become involved in the narcotics trade, decides to send Tommy with some money and to allow him to establish a drug cartel for the Forelli's.

The death of Ricardo Diaz brings change to Vice City, allowing Tommy and Lance to step in and continue the protection ring established by Diaz. Tommy, however, begins to look beyond the protection ring and purchases a number of businesses around the city, most prominently the Malibu Club, the Cherry Popper Ice Cream Factory (used to sell drugs), InterGlobal Films and the Print Works.

Personality

Tommy Vercetti is depicted as both intelligent but temperamental, easily angered and quick to resort to violence, much like Toni Cipriani. He has no hesitation about killing, though many of his victims are in turn trying to kill Tommy as well, or have done something that requires them to be killed. The story does not require Tommy to kill innocent people. Tommy does also show a softer side as seen with his relations with Mercedes Cortez and Earnest Kelly, the latter whom he views as a father figure due to his childhood memories of working with his father at a printworks.

Appearance

Tommy Vercetti is a tall, reasonably muscular Italian-American man in his mid-thirties. He has slicked back dark brown hair, light skin and a light five'O clock shadow. Tommy's usual outfit consists of a light blue Hawaiian shirt, stonewashed blue jeans, and white sneakers (resemble of Adidas Superstar). When dealing with more important business, Tommy wears a blue soirée suit fitting the fashion of the mid-80s.

Inspiration

Notable crimes committed by Tommy

VCBI Record

The Vice City Bureau of Investigation briefly mentions Vercetti[3] despite being a major character in the game.

 • Who is this guy? I've got a call into the Parole Board in Liberty. Seems he was in prison up there.

Trivia

 • Tommy Vercetti is the oldest protagonist of the 3D Universe, and the third oldest of the series, behind Michael De Santa and Trevor Phillips, who are both 48 during the events of Grand Theft Auto V (set in 2013).
 • Tommy and Trevor Philips are the only protagonists to be present for the death of another protagonist in a non-determinant situation. (Tommy witnessed Victor Vance get gunned down during a deal, and Trevor stomped Johnny Klebitz to death)
 • Mercedes Cortez, the daughter of Colonel Juan Garcia Cortez, was conceived as a love interest for Tommy, but Rockstar Games removed this subplot during development. There is a lot of deleted dialogue that involves the relationship between the two.
 • A Tommy Vercetti action figure can be located in the Zero RC shop in San Fierro in GTA San Andreas, along with a Lance Vance, James Earl Cash, and Piggsy figure.
 • An easter egg in Grand Theft Auto IV suggests that Tommy Vercetti, along with the other GTA III Era protagonists, are dead as of 2008. However, GTA IV does not share a canon with the GTA III Era. The egg likely refers to the fact that they will not be featured in any future games.
 • Kent Paul mentioned Tommy on his website with a phrase: "see, Tom, I didn't mention your name, nowhere. Maybe you won't get us killed now, okay?". It possibly means that he was alive in 2002.
 • Tommy is mentioned only once in GTA San Andreas, during "The Meat Business", where Ken mistakenly calls Carl "Tommy", to which Carl rudely responds "Who the fuck is Tommy?".
 • In the official Grand Theft Auto: Vice City strategy guide, it is stated that he is 35 years old during the events of Vice City, making his year of birth 1950/1951.
 • Tommy is shown to like his Street Outfit, as he got angry when Ken Rosenberg told him to change into a Soiree Outfit before attending Colonel Juan Garcia Cortez's Party in the mission The Party.
 • Tommy wears what appears to be a pearl necklace and a gold watch.
 • Tommy has committed the most named murders in the GTA III Era, with a body count of 26 (including optional murders). In the entire series, Tommy commits the second most murders, only beaten by GTA IV protagonist Niko Bellic, who has 50.
 • Tommy kills three of Victor Vance's former employers. (Gonzalez, Ricardo Diaz, and Lance Vance).
 • In DRIV3R, a parody of GTA Vice City there are ten hidden enemies named "Timmy Vermicelli" which can be murdered by the player.
 • Tommy Vercetti is portrayed as being a highly successful protagonist throughout and at the end of the game.
 • Vercetti is also the only verbal protagonist that doesn't say "fuck" in the series (despite the word appearing in a movie poster inside a small house in Phil Cassidy's area in Little Haiti).

Prior to the events of GTA VC
 • Eleven unnamed men (killed during a shootout after they ambushed him when he was sent to kill one person)
