Trial By Fire is a mission in Grand Theft Auto III given to protagonist Claude by Diablos leader El Burro from a payphone in the Hepburn Heights area of Portland, Liberty City.
Mission
Claude answers a payphone in Hepburn Heights; El Burro tells Claude that the Triads had stolen a car of Burro's with some of his personal memorabilia, wrecked the car and left it burning. As an act of revenge El Burro instructs Claude to kill Triad members using a flamethrower stashed in Chinatown.
The mission plays out very similarly to Rampages in GTA III, where the player is required to kill an allocated amount of targets using a specific weapon with unlimited ammo within a time limit; in this case 25 Triad gang members must be killed using a flamethrower within 2 minutes and 30 seconds. The killing spree can only begin once the player obtains the flamethrower pickup in Chinatown that is marked on the map (as a gun icon). Once the player kills the required number of Triad member within the time limit, the player successfully completes the mission.
Notes
- The player will be awarded with a $6,000 bonus by killing a group of six Triads gathering at Chinatown's basketball court. Armed with pistols, they will immediately open fire at the player unprovoked when the player is within their line of sight.
- Regardless of completing "The Pick-Up", Triad members are not normally hostile during the mission. In addition, unlike during standard Rampages, Triad members will flee rather than retaliate when they witness the player killing their own with the flamethrower (burned targets will, as expected from being set on fire, run in panic rather than return fire). The only exception is the group of six Triads gathered at the basketball court, who will continue to fire their pistols at the player until they burn to death. Note, however, that drive-by kills will lead to Triad members opening fire at the player.
Reward
The reward for completing the mission is $10,000, and a new mission from El Burro, "Big'n'Veiny". The Triads will also become violent towards Claude after completion of the mission if the player has not completed "The Pick-Up" beforehand.
