The scripts do bulk-edit jobs like renaming categories, mass deletions and fixing links or syntax. The gtabot account has a "bot" flag, so the edits it makes don't show up in [[Special:RecentChanges\|recent edits]] (unless you choose 'show bots'), that way it stops recent edits being clogged up by thousands of insignificant bot edits.
