A ceiling height limit is an in-game variable introduced in Grand Theft Auto: Vice City that is designed to limit the height that the player can reach, and has become standard in nearly all 3D GTA games since. The main reason for a height limit is to prevent the player from reaching altitudes higher than what the developers intended.
Editing this limit is difficult as it is hardcoded into the executables of the games, but trainers and cheating devices may allow players to "jetpack" or teleport to heights beyond the imposed limit.
List of height limits
The limit is not the same in every Grand Theft Auto game. In Grand Theft Auto III, there is no limit.
Game(s) | Height limit |
---|---|
GTA III | No limit. |
GTA Vice City, GTA Liberty City Stories and GTA Vice City Stories | 75 m (246 ft) |
GTA San Andreas | Unknown, but drastically increased from the limit set in GTA Vice City. Jetpacks, however, are imposed with a far lower height limit. Possibly 850 m (2,805 ft) |
GTA IV and The Lost and Damned | 350 m (1,148 ft) |
The Ballad of Gay Tony | 700 m (2,296 ft) |
Trivia
- In all Grand Theft Auto III era games, it is possible to exceed the height limit by a few metres through flying a jet-powered aircraft at a steep angle through the limit. Note that this process only lasts a few seconds before you drop.
- In GTA Vice City Stories the markets that the player can enter can rarely teleport them high above the limits and the city in which the player can also walk a short distance before falling to there deaths.
- Interiors in GTA San Andreas, being unintended to be accessible via any other means other than through building entrances, are placed in an altitude beyond reach of any aircraft.
