This is a list of characters in Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas, listed roughly in their appearance in the game. Note that the order in which some of these characters appear in-game depends upon the sequence in which the player completes certain missions.

Protagonist

Carl "CJ" Johnson
Carl Johnson, also known as CJ, is returning to Los Santos from Liberty City. After arriving at Los Santos International Airport, he is informed that his mother, Beverly Johnson, has died. He misses the funeral but decides to stay and prove his loyalty to his brother Sean "Sweet" Johnson and to the brothers' gang, the Grove Street Families. Carl then begins to help the Grove Street Families and weaken their rivals, whilst also establishing a business empire throughout the state of San Andreas.
He is voiced by Christopher "Chris" Bellard a.k.a. Young Maylay.

Main Characters

Character Range of Missions Description

Frank Tenpenny
In The Beginning - End of the Line A primary antagonist to the game, Tenpenny is a police officer with the Los Santos Police Department and heads up the community policing unit C.R.A.S.H.. He and partner Edward "Eddie" Pulaski, who are joined by rookie Jimmy Hernandez, are involved in creating trouble for the gangs of Los Santos and in particular for Carl. Tenpenny frames Carl for the murder of Ralph Pendelbury and later employs him to tackle the Ballas and Los Santos Vagos. Tenpenny later leaves Los Santos and continues to have Carl perform various tasks for him. He later turns on Hernandez and is put on trial.
