Colony Island

Colony Island is an island Liberty City in Grand Theft Auto IV. The island is officially part of the borough of Algonquin and is situated between Algonquin Isle and Broker. It is accessible via Leaper's Bridge and Sky Tram. Unlike its twin island of Charge Island to the north, Colony Island is heavily developed; this is likely due to the fact that Colony island is closer to Algonquin and has a direct connection to the borough.

Character

Based on New York City's Roosevelt Island can best be described as a small town in the center of a large, urban metropolis. Its island location gives it a feel and character matched by no other areas in Liberty City. The Algonquin Bridge passes over the northern portion of the island, serving as an unofficial demarcation point of the residential areas to the south and the cemetery on the northern end. A large industrial park spans across almost the entire eastern perimeter of the island, while a waterfront promenade runs along the western face, offering great views of the Algonquin skyline to the west. Finally, the southern end of the island features an abandoned hospital,which is featured in the mission The Snow Storm.

A few small, indepent businesses are located on the island, as well as several parking lots.

Influence

As mentioned earlier, Colony Island is obviously Liberty City's Roosevelt Island. The two islands are both located in the center of a major river separating two boroughs of a city. The Algonquin Bridge mimics the Queensboro Bridge in this location as it passes directly over the island, and the existence of the abandoned hospital makes the connection even more blatant (the abandoned Smallpox Hospital is located on Roosevelt Island).

Transporation

While the Liberty City Subway does not serve Colony Island, the Liberty Transport Authority (which maintains the Subway) operates a tram service between Algonquin and the island, a replication of the Roosevelt Island Tramway. The tram station is located on Main Street, underneath the southern side of the Algonquin Bridge above.
