This is a timeline of events relating to Grand Theft Auto IV.

1600s

1609: Horatio Humboldt sails his ship to the present day Humboldt River, Liberty City.
1625: The first ships of slaves arrived in New Rotterdam to give the Americans.
1664: British warships enter the New Rotterdam harbour, renaming the area Liberty City.

1700s

1763: The American Revolution began in Liberty City.
1783: Slaves were outlawed in the northern states; women were forced to service men in Liberty City.

1800s

1835: The cities first newspaper, The Liberty Tree, was first published.
1857: The financial markets of The Exchange collapsed.
1861: The American Civil War begins.
1872: The Mary Celeste's crew mysteriously disappears. This incident is mentioned on liesdamnlies.net.
1874: The first Liberty City Subway station opened.
1879: The first train for the subway station was constructed.
1886: France gives the US the Statue of Happiness to celebrate the 100th anniversary of the country’s independence.

1920s

1923: Jon Gravelli is born in Meadow Hills, Liberty City.
1928: Construction on the Zirconium Building started.

1930s

1930: The Zirconium Building was open to the public.
1930-1931: The Rotterdam Tower was built.
1935: Maureen McReary is born in Ireland.

1940s

1949: The Angels of Death are founded in San Andreas.

1950s

1953: Tony Black is born in Liberty City.
1954: Rudy D'Avanzo is born.
1955 (November 1): The Vietnam war begins.
1956: Derrick McReary is born in Dukes, Liberty City.
1957: James Pegorino is born in Alderney City.
1957: The first Rusty Brown's Ring Donuts shop opens up in Vice City.
1958: Anthony "Gay Tony" Prince (Midwest or Dukes, one claim) and Ray Bulgarin is born in Russia.

1960s

1960: Kenny Petrovic is born in Russia.
1962: Harper, a member of the Lost Brotherhood, is born.
1963: Mikhail Faustin (Russia), Francis McReary (Dukes), Anthony Prince (Midwest or Dukes, another claim), Jim Fitzgerald and Clay Simons (both Acter) and Ahmed Khalil (Saudi Arabia) are all born.
1964: The founding members of The Lost Brotherhood meet while fighting in the Vietnam War.
1965: Sammy Bottino is born in Broker, Liberty City.
1967: Vladimir Glebov (Russia) and Thomas Stubbs III (Algonquin) are born.
1968: Phil Bell (Alderney City), Jon Gravelli, Jr. (Broker) and Chan Jaoming (China) are all born.
1969: Dimitri Rascalov (Russia) and Brian Jeremy (Acter) are born

1970s

1970: Ilyena Faustin is born in Russia.
1971: Billy Grey (Acter), Mori Kibbutz (Midwest, year of birth unconfirmed) and Dirty Sue (place of birth unconfirmed) are born.
1973: Manny Escuela (South Bohan), Dwayne Forge (North Holland) and Gerry McReary (Dukes) are born.
1974: Johnny Klebitz is born in Acter.
1975 (April 30): The Vietnam War ends, and the The Lost Brotherhood is later created by several war veterans.
1975: Angus Martin is born in Alderney.
1976: Ray Boccino is born in Westdyke.
1977: Roman Bellic (Yugoslavia), Bruce Kibbutz (Midwest), Elizabeta Torres (South Bohan), Gracie Ancelotti (Alderney City), Terry Thorpe (Acter), Yusuf Amir (Dubai, UAE), and Frankie Garone are all born.
1978: Niko Bellic and Florian Cravic (both Yugoslavia) are born.
1978: Jon Gravelli becomes boss of the Gambetti Family.
1979: Patrick "Packie" McReary (Dukes), Mallorie Bardas (Puerto Rico), Malc and DeSean (both Northwood) are born.

1980s

1980: Kate McReary is born in Dukes, Liberty City and Teddy Benavidez is born in the Dominican Republic.
1981: Teafore "Real Badman" Maxwell-Davies (Jamaica), Ashley Butler (Acter) and Rocco Pelosi (Liberty City) are all born.
1982: "Little" Jacob Hughes is born in Jamaica, Night Hog dies in a shootout and Lenny Petrovic is born in Liberty City.
1983: Huang Lee (Kowloon, Hong Kong), Luis Lopez (Northwood) and Trey "Playboy X" Stewart (North Holland) are all born.
1985: Mitch (TLAD) dies while having sexual intercourse on a moving bike and was hit by a freight train.
1988: Anna Faustin is born.

1990s

1990: Niko Bellic is twelve when his family gets first electricity.
1992 (April 1): The Bosnian war begins. Niko Bellic fights in the Bosnian conflict on the Serbian side at only fourteen.
1993: Dwayne Forge is jailed on crack distribution charges.
1995 (December 14): The Bosnian war is declared over with the signing of the Dayton Agreement, although many conflicts still continue. Around this time, Niko Bellic and his army unit are betrayed and killed except for him, Florian Cravic and Darko Brevic. Niko begins searching for the traitor.
1998: Niko's cousin Roman emigrates to the USA, where he settles in Liberty City and becomes a cab driver.
1999: Bozo was shot directly in the head in a shootout with three police officers.

2000s

2000: Mr. McReary commits suicide. The Irish Mob leaves Purgatory and settles in Dukes.
2001 (September 11): The 9/11 attacks occured. The attacks are frequently mentioned, especially in political atmospheres like Weazel News.
2001: Dirty Sue, a member of The Lost Brotherhood, is killed in a motorcyle accident.
2003 (March 20 - May 1): The US first invades Iraq - this conflict is mentioned in GTA IV.
2003: Harper loses an ear in an explosion.
2003: James Pedeaston, a suspected pedophile and humanitarian worker, is arrested by Indonesian police in Bali, provoking a diplomatic crisis between the U.S. and Indonesia since he was arrested without trial.
2006: Harper dies from a drug laboratory explosion.

2008: The events of GTA IV, The Lost and Damned and The Ballad Of Gay Tony all take place in autumn.

Angels in America, No Love Lost take place on the same day, when Jason Michaels dies.
Action/Reaction takes place after Roman's Sorrow, according to internet news.
Blow Your Cover and Buyer's Market are one event.
Tom Goldberg is killed before Hit the Pipe, according to internet news.
Roman's Holiday takes place very shortly before Hostile Negotiation.
Three Leaf Clover and I Luv LC take place on the same day, when a bank is robbed.
Frosting On The Cake and Diamonds in the Rough are one event, and both right before Taking in the Trash.
Museum Piece, Collector's Item and Not So Fast, the infamous diamond deal, all take place at the same time.
Was It Worth It?, No Way on the Subway happen at the same time after Johnny leaves Drusilla's, when Jim Fitzgerald dies.
Ladies' Night happens in between Ransom (because Tony is forwarded the photo) and She's a Keeper (because Gracie is at the original hideout).
Diamonds Are a Girl's Best Friend and Ladies Half Price are one event.
Dimitri Rascalov is killed before Departure Time. There is a rumor that the explosion in Niko's finale (either A Revenger's Tragedy or Out of Commission) is caused by Ray Bulgarin's private jet blowing up in Departure Time. This might suggest Rascalov was killed prior to these missions and Niko chose Revenge, though it depends how fast news of Rascalov's death would travel.

Billy Grey is chronologically not supposed to appear in the mission Chinese Takeout, because he was arrested before Elizabeta Torres was.

2008 (October 3): TARP, the $700 billion bailout of several major banks, is signed into law by George W. Bush in real life. Tony Prince briefly mentions a similar bailout in the mission I Luv LC.
2009: The events of GTA Chinatown Wars takes place.
