Storyline
Five years ago Carl Johnson escaped from the pressures of life in Los Santos, San Andreas... a city tearing itself apart with gang trouble, drugs and corruption. Where filmstars and millionaires do their best to avoid the dealers and gangbangers.
Now, it's the early 90s. Carl's got to go home. His mother has been murdered, his family has fallen apart and his childhood friends are all heading towards disaster.
On his return to the neighborhood, a couple of corrupt cops frame him for homicide. CJ is forced on a journey that takes him across the entire state of San Andreas, to save his family and to take control of the streets.

A basic story of what major things happened, leading up to GTA: SA (SPOILERS!!!) (some events are made up by me):
Late 1986:
Georgio Forelli is after Tommy for Sonny's death. CJ, the second oldest Johnson sibling and GSF Gang Co-Leader, finds out from Joey Leone, and warns Tommy, as he is his old friend. Tommy flies over to San Andreas. Meanwhile, Brian Johnson, Carl's youngest sibling and also fellow member of the GSF is hit by 3 bullets during a gang war, and later dies. Sweet Johnson, oldest Johnson sibling and GSF Gang Leader, freaks out at CJ. CJ finds out Georgio is the main reason Brian died, and so he begins to go after him.

After Georgio and, or so CJ thinks, Tommy, are both killed in an explosion, CJ bids farewell to his dear friend and feels his work in San Andreas is done. He leaves to Liberty City. However Tommy escapes the ruins.
Late 1986/Early 1987 - Mid 1992:
CJ does jobs for Joey Leone until his mother is killed in a Drive-By, with Sweet intended as the person killed. A Green Sabre "did the work". Sweet calls, and tells him about his mom. CJ flies back to San Andreas, and so a huge underdog story begins!
Location
The state of San Andreas is based around three cities:
- Los Santos is a gritty city, based on Los Angeles, mostly ghetto.
- San Fierro is a bustling busy corporate city.
- Las Venturas is an exciting city of opportunity, fun and sex.
Around the cities, there are large areas of countryside
- Red County is countryside between Los Santos and San Fierro, with farms and small towns
- Flint County is the setting for the spectacular Mount Chiliad
- Bone County is the desert west of Las Venturas, with the top-secret Area 69
