My Home, Submenu & Rich Text Editing

ok heres a couple things i think we need back, the my home feature because its a lot more clean looking, the sub menu feature in the side-bar and the rich text editing, i will update this page if i see any other issues/problems MegaHyperNova 13:02, 10 October 2010 (BST)

MyHome is a Wikia feature, why do so many people want that back anyway? The main section of it is just a less useful version of Recent Edits. The submenus in the sidebar are a feature from the Monaco skin, which we would have no longer had on Wikia anyway. I have never seen another MediaWiki skin with submenus unfortunately. As for the rich text editor, that was once again a Wikia feature, and most MediaWiki rich text editors break the wiki markup of pages. The most important parts of the wiki markup are fairly easy to learn, and in fact, manually entering the markup is much easier/quicker (once you know it) than pressing buttons on a rich text editor. If you're unsure what an edit will look like after saving, simply hit the preview button (next to the save button). The main wiki markup you need to know are: To make links, simply use two square brackets on either side of the text that you're linking, for example: [[Sandbox]] creates a link to the Sandbox. You can also change the text of the link like this: [[Sandbox|test editing here]], which creates a link to the Sandbox that says test editing here. The other two most important things are italics, made like ''this'', and bold, made like '''this'''. Filling in infoboxes is less simple, but still quite easy to learn. If you don't know how to do something, you can always use the toolbar above the edit box, or the box full of different code below the save button: just click the type of code that you would like to use, and it will be inserted into the page at the current cursor location. Of course, you can also ask any member of staff if you don't know how to do something, and we are happy to help! JFletcherTalk (formerly User:Biggest gta fan ever) 07:09, 11 October 2010 (BST)

i already now how to use mark up, but the rich text editor is good for casual editing, and markup is good for adding templates and that kind of stuff, plus wiki noobs won't understand it that good, but what ever. though youtube embedding would be nice to have back lol MegaHyperNova 08:47, 11 October 2010 (BST)

oh yeah i forgot to mention i made the radio station template back when we were with wikia...do we still got the template? MegaHyperNova 02:39, 25 October 2010 (BST)

it is here on our wiki :D MegaHyperNova 02:41, 25 October 2010 (BST)

Yes we still have all articles/pages saved, regardless of namespace! JFletcherTalk (formerly User:Biggest gta fan ever) 02:43, 25 October 2010 (BST)

btw what do you think of the template i made? i made it about a week before we moved :) MegaHyperNova 02:45, 25 October 2010 (BST)

Firstly, before you typed that, I was about to say: if you check View history, you will notice that it's the one that you created. I know that that information is uneeded now, but just saying...
The template looks fine to me, you just need to start using it on more articles (it's currently only used in one article). Perhaps it could use some extra parameters, such as city? year? Anything else? JFletcherTalk (formerly User:Biggest gta fan ever) 02:53, 25 October 2010 (BST) EDIT: BTW, seems this isn't an issue with the move, discuss this further at Template talk:Radio Station, not here. JFletcherTalk (formerly User:Biggest gta fan ever) 02:55, 25 October 2010 (BST)

oh yeah the page didn't get transfered so i pasted the code here from the last wiki, lols. plus i made that template pretty fast, but i can add extra features, not tonight, but maybe sometime this week :) MegaHyperNova 02:58, 25 October 2010 (BST)

The My Home, and sidebar were some of the things I liked. It was easier to keep track of the recent activity. The recent edits is something I really don't like, but it's all we got for now. --Gta-mysteries Talk 11:43, 25 October 2010 (BST)
I admit I liked the sidebar, but I can live without it. As for MyHome, I honestly don't see what the big deal is? As an admin, did it even show the exclaimation marks next do edits, or even give diff links? JFletcherTalk (formerly User:Biggest gta fan ever) 11:46, 25 October 2010 (BST)
Yes, but the My Home was, for me, simpler. Recent edits is alright but the My Home didn't give me a bunch of links. --Gta-mysteries Talk 11:50, 25 October 2010 (BST)
OK, I understand that recent changes can look like a huge bunch of links. What if Gboyers installed the appropriate extensions to get the recent activity to work on the main page again. Did you like that? With Social Profile installed already, it's just a couple of simple extensions to get that working again now... JFletcherTalk (formerly User:Biggest gta fan ever) 11:53, 25 October 2010 (BST)

MHN - You don't need to ask us every time you make an edit, you need to be bold and make the decision yourself as to whether it is useful and correct. We also don't really have the time to go around thanking everyone for their edits, thousands of people have worked on this wiki, so please don't expect us to do that.

For Recent Edits, I use this link which hides all file-namespace edits (which is where most of the mass edits happen). As staff, you can also hide patrolled edits to show only unpatrolled users. We also have Special:UserActivity which may be easier for you. I have already tried MyHome, but it didn't work. Many of Wikia's extensions require their own edited version of MediaWiki (which we don't use), and just don't work on regular MediaWiki. I should be able to get enhanced recent changes working (like on Wikipedia), which groups all edits to a page together instead of showing every edit as a separate entry. What did you want to appear in the sidebar, or was it just the styling? Gboyers 20:40, 25 October 2010 (BST)

I already use (always have used) enhanced recent changes? And as for the sidebar, (at least what liked) was simply the pop out menu, but I've come to like the Vector style anyway. JFletcherTalk (formerly User:Biggest gta fan ever) 23:44, 25 October 2010 (BST)

My bad - forgot that was already there. I have installed the Wikipedia editor (on by default, you can disable in Special:Preferences#Editing). MyHome still doesn't work - any other suggestions? Gboyers 01:53, 26 October 2010 (BST)

Galleries

Pretty minor, but Galleries won't show images any more unless "File:" or "Image:" are prefixed onto each image name. --Bluesboyjr 13:39, 10 October 2010 (BST)

if i remember correctly galleries were a monico feature, and this skin (obviously) isn't monico, sigh i guess we'll have to adapt, but it would be nice to have some of the features back as i listed above :) MegaHyperNova 13:46, 10 October 2010 (BST)

Monaco was only a skin/design. The additional features such as MyHome, user profiles and the image-lightbox are features that Wikia wrote. We can access some of them, but there's no guarantee they would work, we wouldn't be able to maintain them, and they could pose a security risk. I'll look into the gallery code issue, thats nothing to do with the skin. Gboyers 13:50, 10 October 2010 (BST)
Unfortunately, the File: prefix might have to be manually edited to every single gallery on this site. Using it without File: was only possible using Wikia's popup-lightbox gallery. I will try and copy their extension, but there's no guarantee that it will work. Gboyers 12:20, 11 October 2010 (BST)

Search

The search function doesn't seem to work properly. For example, when you search for "Bellic", neither Niko or Roman appear. Also, is it possible to bring across the drop-down search suggestions (e.g. when you type "Mon" into the search bar, Money, Monster Truck, Mona etc. appear)? --Bluesboyjr 15:01, 10 October 2010 (BST)

I'll refresh the search index overnight, when it's quieter. And yes, I'll look into getting a search suggestion extension. Gboyers 15:23, 10 October 2010 (BST)
The search index has been rebuilt, and the search should work much better now. Thanks for your help! Gboyers 02:17, 11 October 2010 (BST)
Predictive search is now enabled, and it is NOT case-sensitive (so searching gta shows GTA Vice City etc). Gboyers 10:23, 14 October 2010 (BST)

Salvatore Leone page problems

The Salvatore Leone page has numerous cite issues on it. The error text is "[Cite error: Ran out of custom link labels for group "". Define more in the MediaWiki:cite_link_label_group- message.]" -Shorty82 22:58, 10 October 2010 (BST)

Fixed Gboyers 11:35, 11 October 2010 (BST)

Other broken stuff

--spaceeinstein 04:36, 11 October 2010 (BST)

Special:MovePage do not have these additional options:

  • Move associated talk page
  • Leave a redirect behind

--spaceeinstein 10:16, 11 October 2010 (BST)

Just for reference, the move subpages option is still available. JFletcherTalk (formerly User:Biggest gta fan ever) 10:19, 11 October 2010 (BST)
Special:MovePage/Main_Page - that shows associated talk page and redirect for me, but doesn't show leave redirect. Is that not the same for you? If so, I'll check the staff permissions. Gboyers 11:22, 11 October 2010 (BST) Fixed Gboyers 11:35, 11 October 2010 (BST)
Ugh, from memory, I might (I can't be sure) have done something really stupid. I might have scrolled up to the top of this page (this talk page) and pressed move. Obviously I wouldn't get the option to move associated talk page. I don't know why leave a redirect didn't show up, but it is now (even on this talk page), and on a main namespace article it is completely normal. JFletcherTalk (formerly User:Biggest gta fan ever) 10:23, 13 October 2010 (BST)

  • Title pages don't seem to support certain characters (i.e. A+B Auto). Here it shows a working link but clicking it redirects to a non-working page.

--spaceeinstein 10:52, 11 October 2010 (BST)

Moving A B Auto to A+B Auto however results in "The destination page already exists" You're given the option to delete the old page and move (don't know what the result would be?) but if it works the history would be replaced with a new history saying that I just created the page (which I copied the content from Wikia)... JFletcherTalk (formerly User:Biggest gta fan ever) 10:57, 11 October 2010 (BST)
I know what this problem is. I've added + to the list of special characters allowed in titles, and I need to modify the htaccess to translate it. Gboyers 11:35, 11 October 2010 (BST)
Same problem with the & symbol (e.g. J & J’s Restaurant). --Bluesboyjr 12:59, 16 October 2010 (BST)

i've already utilized our ability to use youtube embedding, check the section "Videos I Like" on my talkpage :) MegaHyperNova 13:17, 11 October 2010 (BST)

This is a weird issue. If the gallery uses the old shorthand of not using "File/Image", the image in the vehicle infobox creates an incorrect link (see Blista). But after I fixed the gallery by placing "File/Image", the link is corrected (see Cheetah). I'm not yet sure if this only affects infoboxes.--spaceeinstein 03:07, 12 October 2010 (BST)

Pages with special characters now work but trying to move them will lead to an error page.--spaceeinstein 06:34, 19 October 2010 (BST)

100% Completion in GTA Vice City leads to a "not acceptable" page.--spaceeinstein 19:14, 19 October 2010 (BST)
Viewing the history of this page by clicking on the "diff" link in "Recent Edits" leads to this odd error. The page used to be an error page but I didn't manage to take note of what it was.--spaceeinstein 08:22, 13 December 2010 (UTC)
I think that's because the page was moved. The two versions you're comparing with that diff don't exist because they have been moved to another page title. Both diff links in the history work. Just a little bug with MediaWiki perhaps. Gboyers 17:49, 13 December 2010 (UTC)
Here's the error page I was referring to.--spaceeinstein 04:53, 15 December 2010 (UTC)

Create a Page sidebar option

lol we should add that option to the sidebar it's easier and faster to MegaHyperNova 04:53, 11 October 2010 (BST)

Missing Tag?

check this out this is just annoying, another massive string of error messages in Grand Theft Auto: Vice City Stories. MegaHyperNova 13:05, 11 October 2010 (BST)

That was just because I was in the middle of testing some code on the backend. Fixed now Gboyers 13:07, 11 October 2010 (BST)

ok :) MegaHyperNova 13:08, 11 October 2010 (BST)

Random Page/Random Image

There should be a link for Random Page and Random Image. Alleypuppy 00:34, 12 October 2010 (BST)

There is already a link in the sidebar: Random page. We don't have a random image function at the moment. Gboyers 00:36, 12 October 2010 (BST)

Other Languages

It's not a problem but I want to ask; What will be happened to other languages of Grand Theft Wiki? BrkAtsyr 19:25, 12 October 2010 (BST)

We don't own/run those. They all have the choice to do the same thing as us, and we will help them if they want. Gboyers 21:10, 12 October 2010 (BST)
Are the interwiki links necessary now we're no longer on Wikia? Just to note, I attempted edited your talk page GB and it wouldn't allow me to save due to | J S appearing on the page (spaces added so this edit is accepted). A-Dust 01:50, 29 October 2010 (BST)
GTW have sort of fixed the problem. They decided to add a side-bar to google translate to translate a page into another language, so in a sense it was fixed. Kanzler31 23:52, 8 November 2010 (UTC)

Forum

Should the "Forum" pages be archived somewhere now that we have TGTAP for forums?--spaceeinstein 01:22, 25 October 2010 (BST)

The forums are a problem - Right now they're actually part of the main namespace, with "Forum" as part of the title, so they show up in things like OrphanedPages and other special pages. However, if we created the Forum: namespace while they're still there, they would all be lost due to a bug in the MediaWiki software. JFletcherTalk (formerly User:Biggest gta fan ever) 01:51, 25 October 2010 (BST)
Similar situation with the Poll: namespace. JFletcherTalk (formerly User:Biggest gta fan ever) 01:52, 25 October 2010 (BST)

I can fix the forum namespace, but not polls unless we re-add the poll extensions. I hated the wizard-based one that used the poll namespace, and the normal <poll> one we used has security holes. We'll have to hang tight on that for now. For forums, apart from exchanging links, we haven't officially said what discussion should go onto TGTAP, and what should be done here on talk or community pages. Perhaps we should make an intermediary/disambig page to say "for discussions about this, go here"? Gboyers 02:00, 26 October 2010 (BST)

Well the poll namespace is useless, and it's cramping the special pages, so I think you should get the bot to delete everything in it. JFletcherTalk (formerly User:Biggest gta fan ever) 00:37, 27 October 2010 (BST)

Images

This has to do with the images, but this is something different. Many pages were deleted in the GTA Wiki at Wikia with the images being deleted with them, and the only way to fix the image problem is to re-upload them. Since the images are gone from Wikia, it is no longer possible to re-upload the images. Kanzler31 02:01, 25 October 2010 (BST)

Any staff who still have admin rights on the old wiki can view deleted files. Just let us know of any missing files that you cannot access on the old wiki. JFletcherTalk (formerly User:Biggest gta fan ever) 02:02, 25 October 2010 (BST)

Search suggestions

This is a minor problem, but here we go, in the Wikia wiki and in Wikipedia, when you type a word, some suggestions come up. Ok let's say I put Mexico on the search bar on Wikipedia, I get some suggestions, like Mexico, Mexico City, Mexico national football (soccer) team, etc. Yet if I type on this Wiki (for example, Roman) no suggestions appear. Any way to fix this? Thanks. Kanzler31 04:45, 28 November 2010 (UTC)

I did previously have that turned on here. I'll look into it. Thanks - Gboyers 07:09, 28 November 2010 (UTC)

not being able to download new search engine

Every time I click "Add "Grand Theft Wiki (en-gb)"", it fails to download the Grand Theft Wiki search engine. May you please fix this? -- PK2PK2 07:38, 10 December 2010 (UTC)

I've been away, I know what's causing this and will fix it as soon as I can. Gboyers 16:51, 12 December 2010 (UTC)

% sign in title

Every time I type in the percentage title in the search box including this, "100% Completion", it just loads the main page instead of "100% Completion". May you please fix this? -- PK2PK2 00:43, 20 December 2010 (UTC)
