Character history

Maurice Chavez was raised by an unnamed mother and father with whom he appears to have been very fond, believing in his fathers motto: "If you listen, one day you might be heard and when in doubt, use the smell test". During the 1970s he was working as Sal, the Wheat-free Clown, entertaining people at birthdays, bar mitzvas, juvenile correctional facilities, corporate functions and go-go bars. Maurice, despite winning an award as the best up-and-coming dietary restrictive comic act in Vice City, decided to give up, facing competition from Mary, the Meat-free Mime. Maurice decided to try acting as a career and went to seventeen auditions but only found work as a fluffer in a sex education video. He then spent the next year attending a therapy group, suffering anxiety after earning less than $2,000 in 1980, and went through an "exploratory phase" with Alex Shrub claiming that Maurice had considered having a sex change operation. In 1981 he was discovered by Michelle Montanius and began working for Vice City Public Radio.

Maurice initially began hosting "Pressing Issues" in a late night slot but went on to win several awards, including the "Best Personality" award, and the show was moved to a better timeslot. Maurice, during this time, had also begun dating Michelle and, by 1984, Michelle had become pregnant. Maurice, however, refused to make a decision about the babies future with Michelle pressuring him on-air to make a decision: to marry her and keep the baby or to pay for an abortion. Maurice, however, refuses to make a decision and it is unknown whether Michelle kept the child. Maurice is known to have an ex-wife by 1986, which may suggest that he married Michelle and kept the baby.

In 1986, Maurice continued to host Pressing Issues despite his relationship with Michelle having deteriorated to the point of open hostility on-air, with Michelle and Jonathan Freeloader almost constantly insulting Maurice during breaks from the program. Maurice also appeared to have developed, or at least lost control of, anger issues lashing out at guests (such as John F. Hickory) and having violent confrontations with both Pastor Richards and Jeremy Robard (possibly breaking Jeremy's nose after hitting him with a paperweight). He also insults his now ex-girlfriend Michelle, calling her "Melissa". He had also begun dating another woman despite her being married to his best friend and had begun writing a newspaper column, which appears to be liberal in content with Alex Shrub disliking the column.
