Syria

Syria, officially the Syrian Arab Republic, is a country in western Asia with borders to Iraq, Israel, Lebanon and Turkey. Syria gained its independence from France on April 17, 1946 and formed a union with Egypt called the the United Arab Republic, which was ended on September 28, 1961. The country is ruled by the Ba'ath Party and was under Emergency Law from 1963 to 2011. A civil war began in 2011, which is still ongoing.
