RE:

Yeah he's been renaming the images for consistency reasons. And yeah images should all share the same pattern like Image:Vc the driver.jpg renamed to TheDriver-GTAVC.jpg--Gta-mysteries 02:09, April 4, 2010 (UTC)

Multiplayer

Man, I like your idea, it's pretty slick man, I like the sounds of 2 people going around together, forming a bond, or even if GTA IVs choices were anything to go by, going down opposite roads, betraying each other, and fighting throughout, obviously with certain points where they'd HAVE to work together, I like your idea man, but it'd have to be it's own game, to follow WITH another GTA Zachariah Zuan 23:38, August 26, 2010 (UTC)

Reply:Mission Images

I was the person who uploaded the images and, as they are direct copies from the Polish GTA Wikia, I did not edit their version. I also believe that the large screen images, including those with the letter box, are better than smaller images if only to maintain the same image size. The subtitles are also useful to establish the part of the mission the image is from, which is not always clear. Also when uploading images please stick to the established format (File:MissionNameHere-GTAInitials). Thank you. A-Dust 17:33, 4 June 2011 (BST)

As I stated above it is better to maintain the same type of image throughout our mission pages and in particular on the same article. The subtitles, regardless of the language, are also useful for establishing what the image is depicting. A-Dust 19:14, 30 June 2011 (BST)
That sounds great! We still need to get our own images but the ones from the Polish GTA Wikia are good to have for the moment. We'd obviously much prefer to not have the letter box and have subtitles on the screen. Will you be taking a few images from missions or many, more like for use in a walkthrough? A-Dust 21:26, 30 June 2011 (BST)

I don't think letterboxes look good, but subtitles can be useful to highlight a part of a mission, especially if it's one that doesn't look very exciting. Gboyers 21:11, 3 July 2011 (BST)

We need to have images either with or without subtitles, not a mixture. And images should really have subtitles, regardless of whether they appear interesting or not. The letterboxes are not important though. A-Dust 21:50, 3 July 2011 (BST)
I meant to post here when I first made the edit, but then I got a phonecall and I had to run. Missions in GTA San Andreas isn't locked. I do notice that the section [Edit] links are missing, but you can use the edit button at the top of the page. Is that your problem, or is there some other problem? JFletcherTalk (formerly User:Biggest gta fan ever) 07:44, 4 July 2011 (BST)
Usually if there are no section edit links, I would expect to find __NOEDITSECTION__ somewhere in the source code, which specifically removes them. However, as this is not the case, I have no idea why they are missing. And a long page like that is where they are useful, too... Mission ordering

The reason I place the first image first is to avoid spoilers for those who are unaware of the storyline of the game, especially considering that the GTA III Era games were recently released again for Mac OS X. The images do get to look a bit repetitive, which doesn't always look brilliant, but it avoids spoilers. I'd also like to thank you for the images again. A-Dust 11:59, 8 July 2011 (BST)

Trusted Users & Patrolling

Hi Silver Infernus. We've made a few changes to Grand Theft Wiki, our staff structure and the way we monitor edits. You may have noticed A-Dust marked you as a 'Trusted User' the other day (which I support)! As you're a Trusted User, we've given you the right to patrol other users' edits. This means you can check out the edits that haven't been checked yet, and either endorse them, fix them or revert them. As you're trusted, your edits are automatically marked as patrolled too! It would be a great help if you could patrol a few edits from Special:Patrol each time you visit GTW, and it would look good if you were nominated for promotion too! See Grand Theft Wiki:Patrolling for help and more info (I used your edits as an example), and give it a go! Let me know if you have any questions - gboyers talk 00:40, 8 January 2012 (UTC)

Re:Patrol

In reply to Patrol

Yes I did make you a trusted user as I've never had to do anything with your edits, other than mark them as patrolled. Part of the reason you wouldn't have known is because I'm currently listed as a bot so my activities remain hidden from view to avoid clogging up the Recent Edits, although you can see them using the Show Bots link at the Recent Edits page, as I'm currently undertaking a large re-organising task on here. The other reason is that I was going to bring it up with Gboyers as we've made some changes to the inspector role, something I think you can do, but got distracted with the re-organising and watching films. And yes I've noticed you re-appearance and the images are, as always, much appreciated! That's strange about the images though. Could you give any examples of images this is a problem with? As for the image ordering, once I've finished the re-organising I'll get round to it. I'd rather have images on the site and under the correct name. Thank you again for taking the time to help this site! A-Dust 02:25, 8 January 2012 (UTC)

Thanks for pointing that out and well spotted. Unfortunately I'm none the wiser when it comes to this kind of thing but I have told Gboyers, who'll find a way of fixing it as he always does. A-Dust 02:40, 8 January 2012 (UTC)

Nomination for Promotion

Hi. I've started a discussion to decide whether you will be promoted to Administrator. Please edit your promotion discussion page with whether you're up for it, why you want to do it, and your answers to the questions. I'm not making any promises at this stage, but I think you're worth considering, and this discussion will help the staff make that decision. Good luck! gboyers talk 18:21, 14 January 2012 (UTC)

I added a couple of extra questions which you haven't answered yet - could you check those out? Thanks - gboyers talk 02:51, 21 January 2012 (UTC)

Congratulations - you have been promoted to Administrator. Just to clarify the new rights, responsibilities and limitations of your new role: admins are responsible for keeping the wiki running smoothly, which is why we give you the extra tools. It's not that admins are 'in charge' of other users, but they have the responsibility to make sure everything runs smoothly. Think of it how a Police Officer is not in charge of the citizens, but in an emergency they can put their foot down and make sure everything runs smoothly.

This is one thing I wanted to make sure was completely clear, in light of your promotion discussion. The purpose of staff is not to make decisions, tell people what to do, or 'handle authority'. Decisions and disagreements we have to 'sort out' are actually pretty rare. The main role of the staff team (as a whole) is to keep the wiki running smoothly (giving it a gentle nudge in the right direction every now and then), and to be the public face of the wiki for its users (to answer questions, help them out, and encourage them). This is what the vast majority of the staff time is spent on. Staff are trusted with extra tools to help them do that job, and also to step in should something bad happen. Please don't be thinking that now you have the badge and the rights that you have to use them or that you should be blocking people or deleting pages frequently.

The rights you have are listed on Special:ListGroupRights (just ask me if you need any of them explaining). The ones you'll use most are move, delete and block. Have a browse through Special:SpecialPages as you might find some interesting things in there. I really don't mean to scare you though - it's great fun being staff here, and I'm really proud to have started this site and helped it grow. I look forward to you being able to stamp your mark on the site and help make it even better than you could as a normal user. Over time, every staff member figures out what they like most and forges a niche for themselves (such as organising images or fixing-up crappy pages) - I hope you spend the time to figure out what you enjoy most and become really useful to us!

The administrator position is subject to a 4-week probation period. This simply means in 4 weeks I'll speak to the rest of the staff and decide whether to make your promotion permanent, or whether we need to think again. It shouldn't be a problem but it gives us an opportunity to see you at work (because good users don't always make good admins). Also, please could you sign up for an account at The GTA Place Forums and then let me know your username (on here), so that you can access our private GTA staff forum? Also, could you verify your email address in Special:Preferences just so we can verify your identify if your account is ever compromised?

And don't forget - if you have any questions, please don't hesitate to ask me or another staff member. It's my personal responsibility to make sure you get up to speed and become an awesome member of staff and help make this wiki even better! Good luck - gboyers talk 23:25, 29 January 2012 (UTC)

Well it's been a month, and I'm happy with your progress, so I'm very pleased to confirm you as a full, permanent staff member! Do you have any comments or questions from your first month? gboyers talk 21:49, 17 February 2012 (UTC)

Images

Hi, I think you're doing a great job with the San Andreas images. I do wonder though, is it really necessary to save them all as .png's? At that resolution the filesizes are quite massive and people with low internet speeds might have a problem with that. :/ I hope I don't sound like a mr. wise-guy, it's just something that crossed my mind.

By the way, congrats on the promotion! Andreaz1 (talk) 19:12, 3 February 2012 (UTC)

Just to respond to that - there are pros and cons to all image formats. PNG is the best quality (especially for resizing, which we do a lot with thumbnails), work best with icons (and other simple images), and can be transparent. JPGs work best for real-world photos and those with gradients, and are probably have the best compression (so smallest file sizes). SVGs are great but hard to create. GIFs are good only for animations, really. BMPs are huge and useless and we don't allow them to be used on here. So wiki policy is to use either SVGs or PNGs for icons, and either PNGs or JPEGs for screenshots/photos. gboyers talk 19:30, 3 February 2012 (UTC)

Yeah, I use Photoshop to save/resize my images but I only tend to use .png if there is transparency in the image. I wasn't on about the file format itself when I said they take long to load, more the fact that .png tends to give huge filesizes, ~1.6Mb for your images whereas I keep mine at around 300kb (better compression as gboyers said), and I can't see any difference in quality. I've never been any good at spotting quality differences in images but I know that .png is supposed to give the best quality. Anyway, most people have good internet these days so bigger filesizes shouldn't be a problem and as I said, it was just a thought. (: Andreaz1 (talk) 20:17, 3 February 2012 (UTC)

Those are good points - and mobile users probably care the most about image size. But bear in mind 99% of people who view the image will only ever see the thumbnail, which will be a very small size even if the original uploaded image is a 10mb giant super-hi-res PNG. It's nice to have the hi-res high-quality versions for those people who want to click on it to see more detail. gboyers talk 01:44, 4 February 2012 (UTC)

Images Problem

Hi Silver Infernus- You seem to have a lot of experience with images! Do you have an idea as to what is wrong with the newer version of file I uploaded Here. I am worried to try and fix it as it might not work, resulting in me spamming up the recent changes section and the file's history. It has never happened to me before. Thanks--Montario (talk) 18:04, 4 February 2012 (UTC)

Chat

So you are aware Gboyers, JFletcher, Chimpso, Andreaz1 and myself are currently discussing issues such as naming conventions and how best to prepare for the release of GTA V as I type. If you are around and wish to become involved I can give you the link. A-Dust 22:41, 25 February 2012 (UTC)

The link is here. You'll need to sign in with a nickname and the channel is #gtawiki. A-Dust 22:45, 25 February 2012 (UTC)

Discussion

We're planning to have another discussion about our plans for GTA V in the IRC chat again tonight, starting in half an hour (9pm GMT/4pm in Ontario). Hope to see you there if you can make it. A-Dust 20:31, 3 March 2012 (UTC)

Hey dude, how're things? Just wanted to catch up and see whether you're still interested in editing/admining here or whether you've moved on?
