You're right, galleries have changed to introduce the popup lightbox, as discussed [http://community.wikia.com/wiki/User_blog:Kirkburn/Photo_gallery_launch here]. We can bypass this, by adding a link: <code>Image.jpg|link=Pagename|caption</code> - example is [http://gta.wikia.com/index.php?title=The_Well_Stacked_Pizza_Co.#GTA_Vice_City_and_GTA_Vice_City_Stories here], but this is long and messy. I can't see a way to disable lightbox (ie "lightbox=0" or "preview=none") so it would be best to ask Kirkburn on his talk page. It wouldn't be so bad if the "view photo details" box was bigger, so I'll add some CSS to make this more obvious.
