Rockstar has officially said a couple of months ago that there are no eras, but there are universes: The 2D universe (GTA, GTA2), the 3D universe (GTA III - GTA VCS) and the HD universe (GTA IV - GTA V). On the wiki V has its own Era, even if it's fairly obvious from the Trailer that it's set in the IV Universe (some cars are identical to those from IV).

what I'm asking for is reorganisation of the Era theory, but I know it'll be rejected because I'm not Wiki staff. Scrab (talk) 07:22, 24 April 2012 (UTC)

:I've responded to your specific suggestion on Talk:GTA IV Era. Eras are a grouping system that goes under the universe system - we do use both. Even though GTA V is still within the HD universe (as Rockstar have mentioned), it's still a new era. Even though there are some overlaps (such as vehicles), it's still a new era.
:The only extra thing I'd point out is that the 2011 trailer is very early, perhaps as early as 2 years before release. This would explain why some GTA IV vehicle models had been re-used, and I would expect those to change somewhat before release. I was with Rockstar at the weekend, and I know they still modify parts of games right up until release, literally until a week or two before. I also know they have working alpha copies of games several years before release, long before even resemble the final game, and that's why models from previous games are used until new ones are made. The trailers haven't shown us anything to suggest that this is "GTA IV, Part II, Niko's trip across the US" or anything that would make us stick it into the IV era.
:So whilst there will be similarities and overlaps (vehicles making an appearance, references to the IV storyline) the games won't be paired together (like expansion packs or a Part II), and they are both part of the HD universe, there's nothing to suggest the games are identical or paired or anything that would make us completely throw away the era grouping system. As I explained, the eras are just a grouping system that explain quite well what goes on and which games are definitely grouped together.
:Also, having suggestions accepted or rejected is nothing to do with being staff, please don't suggest that. It's true that amongst the staff we have had many discussions about eras, but in the end we've always decided to stick with them. The reason I confidently answer your question is because we've had these discussions many times, and there's still no evidence to suggest it's a bad system or somehow wrong. I'm always happy to have these discussions - that's what makes this wiki what it is, and that's how we've made thousands of decisions over the years. This is all part of the wiki collaboration process! gboyers talk 07:42, 24 April 2012 (UTC)
