Prostitutes (aka Hookers) have been in all the Grand Theft Auto games since GTA III. They are only out on the streets at nighttime, and to get their services you have to drive close to them and honk your horn. Then you have to go someplace secluded and you start "interacting" with them.

Prostitutes can get your health up past 100%, but it costs you money. However, you can kill the hooker and take your money back when you're finished. Such acts are commonly used in referencing how "bad" the GTA games are.

Picking up hookers have pretty much been the same for GTA III and GTA Vice City; simply by pulling up to one and honking your horn. Honking your horn isn't really neccessary in order to get a hooker in your car. Simply pulling up to one and having her approach your car is enough.

In GTA San Andreas, however, if a hooker approaches your car, you have the option to accept or decline her offer to enter the car by simply using the "positive" or "negative" response buttons you normally use when speaking to pedestrians. This is useful, since many complained that they did not want hookers getting in their car when they simply pulled to the side of the road.

In GTA IV, this is replaced with a "yes" option, or just don't press that button if you want "no".

In GTA San Andreas, you could do "Pimping" missions, where, once you reached the max level, hookers would pay YOU for having sex with them.
