GTA IV - graphics lag prevets me from finishing a mission

hey guys

I cant complete the final mission 'A revenger's tragedy' because of a really annoying problem

At the part when you have to climb on the heli each time I press space the game freezes for a milisecond and the button mashing isn't being registered thus I always fall down after a minute

how can I overcome this problem?
