"The Pick-Up" is a mission in Grand Theft Auto III given to protagonist Claude by Leone Family Caporegime Toni Cipriani from his mother's restaurant in Saint Mark's, Portland, Liberty City.

Mission

Claude goes to Momma's Restaurante and reads a note left by Toni, with Toni requesting that Claude pick up the protection money from Mr. Wong's Laundromat, after successfully intimidating the laundromat in the previous mission. Toni says that the money is in a briefcase around the back of the laundromat in Chinatown, but warns him that the Triads may attack.

The mission is initially simple: The player is required to head to the mentioned location of the pick-up (located in the middle of a block connected by three cramped alleyways) and obtain the briefcase pickup containing the protection money. However, the player will then be surrounded by a group of five Triad members (two on two sides and one, who exits from a blocking Triad Fish Van, on the third side) armed with baseball bats, who proceed to immediately attack the player. From this point on the player can choose to either kill the Triad members or flee; upon killing all the Triad ambushers or leaving the block another abusing Triad member (this time armed with a pistol) will pursue the player in another Triad Fish Van. Regardless of whether the player kills the remaining Triad pursuer, the player will complete the mission once they deliver the money to Momma's Restaurante.

Script

Ma Cipriani: Toni's off making people bleed, or trying to. He'll never be as tough as his Pop, but he left you a note on the table.

Toni Cipriani (voice only): The laundry has agreed to pay - you did real good kid! Go collect the cash and bring it back here. Watch out for the Triads. They may be shoving a firecracker up your ass, but don't take no crap. Nobody I mean nobody, messes with TONI CIPRIANI!

Reward

The reward for completing the mission is $10,000. The mission "Salvatore's Called A Meeting" is unlocked. The Triads are now hostile towards Claude if the player has not completed El Burro's mission "Trial By Fire".

Notes

  • Toni refers to himself as Toni Kipriani yet in "Cipriani's Chauffeur", he addresses himself correctly as Toni Sipriani. The "Kipriani" pronunciation eventually fell out in favor of "Sipriani", as evidenced in Grand Theft Auto: Liberty City Stories.
  • While very narrow, the alleyways still lend room for a moderately sized vehicle to be driven through. An efficient tactic is to carefully drive the player's vehicle directly next to the protection money pickup, allow for a quick exit, while being able to run down at least one ambushing Triad.
