Niko Bellic is the protagonist (main character) of Grand Theft Auto IV. He has a strong Eastern European accent - possibly Russian, perhaps from St Petersberg, which is well known for human smuggling into the USA. Judging by the surname, it is more likely he is from a former Yugoslav country, such as Croatia, or Bosnia, where surnames ending with -ic (pronounced like 'itch' and simply meaning "child of") are incredibly common.
In the debut trailer he has a brief monologue: "Life is complicated; I killed people, smuggled people, sold people. Perhaps here, things will be different."
In his mid-thirties, he travels to Liberty City on the promise of a new life by his cousin Roman, only to be disappointed by his lies - at which point the player of GTA IV takes control.
