Adriatic Sea

The Adriatic Sea is a body of water mentioned in the Grand Theft Auto series separating the Italian Peninsula from the Balkan peninsula and the Apennine Mountains from the Dinaric Alps and adjacent ranges. The Adriatic is the northernmost arm of the Mediterranean Sea, extending from the Strait of Otranto (where it connects to the Ionian Sea) to the northwest and the Po Valley. The countries with coasts on the Adriatic are Italy, Croatia, Albania, Montenegro, Bosnia-Herzegovina, and Slovenia.

Events in the Grand Theft Auto Series

Before the events of Grand Theft Auto IV as early as 1998, gun-for-hire Niko Bellic was working for a human trafficker named Ray Bulgarin, smuggling people from Eastern Europe into Italy across the Adriatic Sea.

On one run, something happened were Niko had to abandon the ship, and was almost killed. He also almost died when he had to swim halfway across the sea into Italy or back into Eastern Europe. After this incident, Bulgarin blamed Niko and wanted him killed, however Niko had joined the merchant Navy, and escaped his influence, eventually ending up in the United States of America, specifically the State of Liberty to visit his cousin Roman Bellic who was living the American Dream in Liberty City.
