The Green Sabre is the twenty-seventh storyline mission and the twenty-fifth central storyline mission in Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas, accessed independently by protagonist Carl "CJ" Johnson under inspiration from his brother Sean "Sweet" Johnson from his house in Ganton, Los Santos, San Andreas.

Mission

The three feuding families of the Grove Street Families have come together to due to Carl's efforts and Sweet decides to finally get back at the Ballas. Sweet also makes good with Carl and calls him his running dog. He then orders everyone to get heated, and meet him under the Mulholland Intersection.

Before he can catch up with the Grove Street gangsters and Sweet, however, Carl is sidetracked on the way by a call from Mexican-American Varrios Los Aztecas gang leader Cesar Vialpando, his sister Kendl's boyfriend and newfound acquaintance, who has some important news for him. At first, Carl explains he is too busy to meet but Cesar is insistent, so Carl heads to the meeting place under the freeway north of Verdant Bluffs to meet Cesar, who is inside a Bravura with tinted windows. Cesar and Carl look ahead, as some Ballas exit a garage, followed by high-ranking Grove Street Families members Lance "Ryder" Wilson and Melvin "Big Smoke" Harris, and finally corrupt C.R.A.S.H. officer Frank Tenpenny, whose partner, Edward "Eddie" Pulaski then reverses a car out of the garage, which is revealed to be the green Sabre that was used in the drive-by in Grove Street which killed Carl's mother Beverly hardly some time before. However, although he does not see Ryder, Carl does sight Smoke, and concludes that he has betrayed the Families to the Ballas.

Suddenly, Carl remembers the shootout at the Mulholland Intersection which Sweet was partaking in, and realizes that Sweet and the rest of the Grove Street Families were lured into a set-up meant to kill the unfortunate leader himself. Remembering his professionalism, however, he first orders Cesar to escort Kendl to safety in case hell breaks loose, and then races over to the underside of the Mulholland Intersection before Sweet and the homies are killed. Upon arriving, Carl sees a deadly shootout taking place, and that Sweet has taken a hit. Out of loyalty, Carl stays with his brother to hold off the Ballas hordes. Numerous Ballas members come and shoot at Carl and the rest of the gang. Carl wipes them all out until the police arrives and Carl, along with a grievously injured Sweet, surrenders.

Once cops arrive, Sweet is taken into a prison hospital, while Carl leaves with C.R.A.S.H., which arrests him, and is abandoned in the countryside in a small rural town, Angel Pine. Tenpenny confronts Carl and, with Pulaski's help, threatens Carl against even a thought of trying to get back on Smoke, who Carl can't stop cursing for his betrayal. Pulaski then leaves him alone with a camera, while Tenpenny explains to Carl that he needs to kill an FBI witness who is trying to testify against the crooked officer to Internal Affairs, and is hiding atop Mount Chiliad.

Script

(Sweet is inside his house, cheering up and motivating a bunch of Grove Street Families gang members.)

Sweet: So this is it - this is when we show the Ballas what bangin' is all about. Grove Street is king! Say it with me niggaz, Grove Street is KING!

Homies: Yeah! Grove Street is KING!

(Carl enters.)

Sweet: Whassup, CJ. Where you been?

CJ: Hey sorry, bro, I got caught up.

Sweet: Yeah, you probably was hittin' one o' them Ballas rats. Yeah I know what you was up to, nigga! Listen up - y'all down with CJ, right? He's been through a lot, I mean we all been through a lot. But CJ's helping us clean up the 'hood. He's taken the fight to the enemy.

CJ: Yeah.

Sweet: Showing all of us how we used to bang, what it used to mean to be a Grove Street Family. CJ, you're my brother, my running dog. I should have never doubted you.

CJ: It's nothing.

Sweet: But you're home now, partner - home.

CJ: For sure.

Sweet: Listen up! I want all y'all to go get heated, and meet me Downtown under the Mulholland Intersection. We're gonna roll on these Balla mother-fuckers!

Homie 1: A'ight, a'ight!

Sweet: I'll see y'all in traffic.

Homie 2: Yeah, let's roll!

Sweet: (to Carl) You in?

CJ: Hell yeah, I'm in, I'm your running dog, Sweet.

Sweet: Yeah, my nigga... Alright, you go get heated up, and I'll meet you at the crossroads.

(Carl is just outside Sweet's house as Sweet and the others have left when his phone rings.)

CJ: Hello?

Cesar: Yo, CJ, it's Cesar, man!

CJ: I'm kinda busy right now, something big going down.

Cesar: Ese, I gotta see you holmes, tell you something.

CJ: Look, if it's about Kendl, don't worry, be cool, alright.

Cesar: No, CJ, you gotta come up and see something ... Something important, eh!

CJ: This gonna have to wait.

Cesar: This can't wait, holmes! If I tell you, you won't believe it, ese, I swear.

CJ: Oh, okay, I got about five so it better be good, where you at?

Cesar: I'm under the freeway, north side of Verdant Bluffs.

(Carl and Mexican-American Varrios Los Aztecas gang leader Cesar "Ces" Vialpando are in a Bravura down the alleyway in Verdant Bluffs.)

CJ: So you dragged me way across town to see... what?

Cesar: Just in time, ese, take a good hard look over there.

(2 Ballas members exit a garage.)

CJ: So, some Ballas hanging around a dope spot, so what?

Cesar: Just watch, homie.

(High-ranking Grove Street Families members Lance "Ryder" Wilson and Melvin "Big Smoke" Harris come out of the door that the Ballas have just walked out of. However, while he fails to see Ryder, Carl does sight Smoke.)

CJ: What the fuck? Oh, no! Shit, Smoke, what you into?

Cesar: Ssshhh, ese, look at that ride...

(Smoke and Ryder pull open a garage door, wherein corrupt C.R.A.S.H. officer Frank Tenpenny is inside the garage along with a green Sabre, which is being pulled out by his partner, Edward "Eddie" Pulaski.)

CJ: That's the motherfucking green Sabre! (as Pulaski gets the car out and Tenpenny apparently begins explaining things to Smoke) Shit, Smoke... C.R.A.S.H. makin' you sell us out! Moms!

Cesar: Sorry ese, I heard a rumour and poked around. I didn't believe it myself but...

CJ: No, no, you did the right thing. I owe you, Ces. I gotta go tell Sweet about - Oh, fuck! Sweet! Look, go get Kendl and take her to a safe place!

Cesar: What you thinking?

CJ: It's Sweet, I think him and the homies is walking into a trap! Just go, GO!

(On his way to the Mulholland Intersection, Carl tries to connect to Sweet via call.)

CJ: God damn it, Sweet! Pick up, pick up!

Sweet's Voicemail: Hey, you tried to connect to Sweet, but he ain't picking up. So leave your message out for him.

CJ: Shit! Shit! Shit!

(Carl arrives under the intersection after Cesar leaves, only to see that Sweet is severely wounded and has rested himself to the ground on his knees.)

CJ: (holds Sweet's hand as he falls) Eh, Sweet man, you alright? You been hit!

Sweet: CJ... Where you been?

CJ: Cesar called, showed me some shit. It's Smoke, and he in deep with Tenpenny and some Ballas! He sold us out!

Sweet: It doesn't matter, man, (points him away) you gotta get out of here. The cops gonna arrive any second.

CJ: Nah man, I ain't runnin' out on my brother! Yo', Ballas! (gets up and shouts) I'm taking you mother-fuckers, you hear me? I'M TAKING YOU ALL DOWN, BITCHES!

(The police closes in on the battle. Carl holds his hands up in the air whilst Sweet is clutching his stomach on the floor. The screen cuts to Carl, Tenpenny and Pulaski in a police car in the middle of nowhere. Carl is covered and is handcuffed over the back. C.R.A.S.H. rookie Jimmy Hernandez is outside the car having a piss.)

Tenpenny: You got a bag over you head, boy. How you feel about that?

CJ: Man, take it off. Please, man, I can't breathe! Please!

Tenpenny: Oh, alright. But only because you said please. (takes the bag off Carl's head)

CJ: You fucking sick mother-fucker!

Tenpenny: Intimidate those who intimidate others, Carl. It's my job. Right, Ed?

CJ: Hey, man, where we at?

Tenpenny: The middle-of-fucking-nowhere. Nice, clean air.

CJ: Fucking Smoke! Oh, Sweet!

Tenpenny: Sweet is alive. Alive and inside. He's in a prison hospital being treated for gunshot wounds, awaiting trial.

Pulaski: Yeah, somehow, nobody's caught you yet.

Tenpenny: Oh yeah, you should be glad, Carl. Your moron brother's alive. Your street trash, soon to be turned out sister's alive. And, she's only sucking one grease-ball's dick. Things are going pretty well for you, Carl. So behave, nigga.

Pulaski: We want you to do a little favour for us, Carl.

CJ: I can't believe that nigga Smoke turned on me.

Pulaski: (pulls Carl out roughly) Smoke? Smoke does exactly what he's told to. He learned that lesson a long time ago. (opens his handcuff and frees him)

CJ: Relax, man! Take it easy!

Tenpenny: Homies for life? Street loyalty? That's all bullshit, Carl. Didn't you learn that when they ran you out of town, just 'cause you let Brian die? Huh? Eddie, I can't deal with this guy. He's an idiot!

Pulaski: (tries to shoot Carl dead) Let me air this fucker out, I...

Tenpenny: (stops Pulaski) No no no no no no no, Officer... For once, let's let the kid do something good with his useless life. He's gonna help us with the fight against crime. Right, Carl?

Pulaski: Yeah. By any means necessary.

Tenpenny: Now you stay the fuck away from Smoke, and stay the fuck away from us. Otherwise Sweet's going to find himself on a Ballas block getting in touch with his feminine side. Hey Hernandez, you going to piss all day?

CJ: (to Pulaski) Get your hands off me, man.

Pulaski: For some reason, we've got a little problem with a former friend of ours, he seems to disagree with some of our methods.

CJ: Now who could do that?

Tenpenny: Yeah, you'll never find anybody as fork-tongued as this snake ass bastard. Soon as he gets caught with his hand in the cookie jar, he'll whistle any tune Internal Affairs want him to.

Pulaski: See, they've got him hiding up Mount Chiliad someplace, so they can manipulate his testimony any way they want to.

Tenpenny: I want you to pay him a little visit, Carl. And destroy all his evidence before he testifies.

Pulaski: Sort this out, Carl, so Officer Tenpenny can sleep easy at night. We want evidence he ain't gonna talk.

Reward

There is no monetary reward for this mission, but the Badlands mission is unlocked. After the end mission cinematic, the player's weapons will be stripped with the exception of a camera. The player may now buy any safehouse in the countryside, and the player may now save at the Angel Pine Save Point. Also, the player can now traverse Flint County and San Fierro without any police attention.

Grove Street Families and Varrios Los Aztecas territories will be respectively relinquished to the Ballas and Los Santos Vagos. All natural assets, including the cash pointer at The Johnson House, will vanish.

This essentially marks the inception of the exile chapter in the game, which ends with Vertical Bird. The only way to ensure the end of the exile chapter is to complete all missions except Puncture Wounds before starting Home Coming, which reverts all natural losses made at the end of this mission back to their original and implied status.

Trivia

  • In the opening cutscene, a bald GSF member with a goatee and a dark green coat can be seen. Aside from an earlier appearance in Los Sepulcros, he cannot be seen anywhere else in the game. This could be an unused gang member model.
  • Apparently, it looks like Ryder was no part of the mission in the beta, since Carl doesn't notice him at all despite his presence. However, owing to a pay dispute between voice actor MC Eiht and Rockstar, Ryder was later converted to an inconsistent, tertiary antagonist during development of gameplay, and was included in the mission to provide an early evidence of his alliance with Smoke, who remains unseen for the rest of the game, until End of the Line.
  • This is the fourth mission to use the Trip Skip feature, the previous two being Just Business and Madd Dogg's Rhymes.
  • The song that is playing inside Sweet's house is Fuck wit Dre Day by Dr. Dre and Snoop Dogg, a song that also can be heard in Radio Los Santos.
  • While Carl is in the car with Cesar, in the PC version, the steering wheel will have the edges of a square, indicating poor texture.
  • There is no "Mission Passed!" notice after this mission.
    • However, on the iOS, Android, and HD Remaster versions of the game, the "Mission Passed!" notice appears like normal.
  • The Sentinels and Sabres in this mission are scripted to regenerate after being hit. However once they have been damaged enough, they will simply become indestructible.
  • If Carl is inside of a car when the police come, he will simply put his hands up, whilst in the car.
  • The eponymous car in this mission is never seen again after the mission, although it appears throughout The Introduction. The player can mod a Sabre to have the same green paintjob via Transfender.
  • There is a glitch in the iOS version of the game which causes a gang member's mouth to become stuck open during the first cutscene of this mission.
  • Although Cesar says that he discovered the whereabouts of the meeting through a "rumour", it is possible that, according to a fan-made mission, Hernandez actually takes to inform Cesar of a secret cover-up meeting between Tenpenny, Pulaski, Smoke, Ryder and a swarm of Ballas riding the Green Sabre trying to hide the car in the Verdant Bluffs garage, immediately after the events of a deadly shootout between the Families and the Police, implying that the mission expectedly occurs immediately, without loss of game time, after the preceding mission. However, it is unknown whether this particular act is clearly known to Tenpenny and Pulaski towards the close of the story as part of his defection against the corrupt C.R.A.S.H. duo, since all efforts to eliminate evidence against the two by Carl fail at the end, hinting that he may have informed the Feds about these antics even when he wasn't present with the two on the occasions Carl was assigned these tasks. However, while it ultimately leads to his death at the hands of the duo, when Carl kills Pulaski, his many interactions with Internal Affairs eventually make it to the knowledge of undercover government agent Michael "Mike" Toreno, who ironically becomes the instrument of Sweet's freedom after a long stint in prison.
