Grand Theft Wiki talk:Move from Wikia

Quantcast seems to think you haven't really moved; shows grandtheftwiki as part of the Wikia Network, counting your data in their favor (and allowing them access to it?). --M.mendel 09:55, 5 December 2010 (UTC)

Why was wowwiki allowed to create a redirect from their old wikia page and gta wiki cannot? is it because the admins were banned and wikia hates us? Ezanrki 19:38, 17 December 2010 (UTC) is the original Wikia-run site. There are no links or redirects to, which is where the community moved to. So they're being treated the same as us. Feel free to add links to anywhere you like - including Wikia! Gboyers 19:45, 17 December 2010 (UTC)

gta.wikia still there and active

It still shows up first, with this being fourth when I searched. Daniel Christensen 20:38, 25 December 2010 (UTC)

Yep, nothing we can do about that. Wikia kept the "" domain, and they wont let us put any links or redirects to this new site. They are continuing to run their copy as if we never left. That site is still top of all the search engines, because of the work we did, and Wikia is taking all the credit for it. That site gets a lot more visits than this one, but more people edit this one, and the quality is a LOT higher. As you can imagine, we are not happy with Wikia at all. The best way you can help is to link to GTW from loads of other websites (especially Wikia and other GTA sites). Otherwise, it's going to be a long battle. Gboyers 00:15, 26 December 2010 (UTC)

Hey guys I put a warning in the main page [1] of I hope that a sysop don't revert it. Mgs 07:06, 5 January 2011 (UTC)

Ads on GTW

"You will notice that we have not filled this site with adverts to pay for it", why can i actually see an ad box at the left of the page? --Livechatter 20:01, 9 January 2011 (UTC)

we have not filled this site with adverts can loosely be interpreted that there are no massive moving ad videos in the middle of the page. It does not mention explicitly that we don't have any ads at all.--spaceeinstein 20:09, 9 January 2011 (UTC)
ok, thanks for the quick anwser --Livechatter 20:28, 9 January 2011 (UTC)
Absolutely right - Wikia has up to 10 adverts per page, video adverts in the middle of the content area, and dozens of huge links to other wikia sites. That is one of the reasons we left. On here, we just have one little one out of the way at the side, which I hope doesn't annoy anyone. Gboyers 01:06, 10 January 2011 (UTC)
no,a little one doesn't annoy me, but i really hate pop-ups with video adverts. --Livechatter 18:03, 10 January 2011 (UTC)

Donation link in the sidebar?

"To help keep Grand Theft Wiki running, you can donate using the link in the sidebar." Where is the link in the sidebar? I can't see it.--MrLanceVanceDance 07:31, 25 March 2011 (UTC)

I think that due to lack of donations, that link was replaced by the advertisement, and this page just hasn't been updated. Thanks for ponting that out! JFletcherTalk (formerly User:Biggest gta fan ever) 09:26, 25 March 2011 (UTC)

Update this page

"As we have moved away from Wikia, we now have to pay for our own server. You will notice that we have not filled this site with adverts to pay for it. There is only a single advert in the sidebar, which doesn't distract from content."

Grand Theft Wiki now has two adboxes, one at the bottom of the screen, and one adbox on the left hand side. Can somebody please update the page to include those changes?--MrLanceVanceDance (talk) 09:4

Problems with the gta.wikia page

Does the gta.wikia affect this wiki due to the fact that when I search gta wiki on google it leeds to gta.wikia even if I search for articles,so does it affect and explain how does it affect itNameless assasin (talk) 21:41, 18 January 2012 (UTC)

The problem is that Wikia is a gets a lot of traffic, and a lot of people link to Wikia, so Google assumes that it is one of the best sites for everything and ranks it highly. Here in Australia, even searching for "Grand Theft Wiki" shows Wikia's site as the top result. The best thing that we can do to improve our ranking is to get a lot of people to link to GTW, such as in their signature on forum sites, on any social media sites, etc. EDIT: Reading your question again, you're asking how it affects us rather than why it's like that. It just means that a lot of people still go to the Wikia site, because they don't even know that we exist. Even returning users don't realise that we moved, because the new staff of that wiki covered it up. That's why it's important to spread the word about GTW, by linking to us wherever you can (not spam though, legitimate links, such as forum signatures) and telling your friends about us! JFletcherTalk (formerly User:Biggest gta fan ever) 02:03, 19 January 2012 (UTC)
In our (GTA Wikia's current staff) defense, we went back on our decision to help Wikia cover up the move and did as much as we could to clear the air instead. The problem is that we couldn't really do anything besides restore the discussion pages you guys had about the decision to move and create a page with a neutrally-worded synopsis of the issue. But that's about all we can do - if we got more lenient Wikia would very likely step in and demote the current staff, and possibly replace us with someone who would help cover things up and set things back to the way they were just after the split. Jeff (talk this way) / (stalk this way) 00:08, 20 January 2012 (UTC)
So McJeff, if the GTA Wikia staff chose to go back on their decision to help GTA Wikia cover up the Grand Theft Wiki move from Wikia, then why is it that Grand Theft Wiki users still cannot put Grand Theft Wiki links on GTA Wikia? Also, what do you mean by being "too lenient"?--MrLanceVanceDance (talk) 10:55, 20 January 2012 (UTC)
Being too lenient would be allowing us to add links to Grand Theft Wiki on the GTA Wikia website, which Wikia are against. They have their own version of this site and we have the original, but that doesn't mean that Wikia have to link to us. McJeff and the other staff there have been very good to us as they likewise don't have to put links to here, let alone type up a page about the move. Wikia don't want to link to us and the staff their have linked to us, that's a nice thing for them to do, but they don't want to allow us to add a whole load of links and lose their status as staff there for helping our site. Why did grandtheft wiki leave a copy?

I am wondering what was the reason that gtw left a copy to gtawikia i dont really understand was it because they couln't do it or was it just i am just wondering.Nameless assasin (talk) 15:42, 25 January 2012 (UTC)

This is explained at the bottom of Grand Theft Wiki:Move from Wikia. We did not want to leave a copy when we moved, but Wikia chose to keep a copy running, and there's nothing we can do about it. They changed the name (because I owned "Grand Theft Wiki"), but kept the URL (which they owned), and they promoted new staff to run it since all the staff moved here. They still get a lot of traffic (because the URL is the same as the one we used when we were there) but the quality of that site is much lower than GTW. gboyers talk 16:47, 25 January 2012 (UTC)

But does this site have any traffic of the url being the same.Nameless assasin (talk) 17:40, 25 January 2012 (UTC)

Sorry? We used to use the URL - which (even now) still goes to the Wikia copy - so they get a LOT of traffic from that. Now we are using, not as many people know about that URL, so we don't get as much traffic as we used to. We're trying to fix that but it's a slow process. It doesn't matter too much because we prefer quality, and are not obsessed with getting money from adverts. gboyers talk 17:51, 25 January 2012 (UTC)

Wiki networks

Random question, however, seeing that the IGWN exists would it be possible for it to make ties to NIWA? With both Networks, you could get more views. The other wiki only has more views because of google... also if I am correct there is another non-wikia Grand Theft Auto wiki in existence. I can think of another independent wiki WikiGTA. Steahl (talk) 01:07, 2 February 2012 (UTC)

Yes, we would like to make ties with other wiki networks and GTA sites. However, promoting other GTA wikis isn't really beneficial to us - as that would be diluting our members and content across multiple sites. If those sites want to join forces and merge, that's possible, but advertising each other would not work. Also, WikiGTA cannot be edited by the public, which goes against the principles we stand for here. gboyers talk 07:00, 2 February 2012 (UTC)
I didn't know that. Steahl (talk) 15:19, 2 February 2012 (UTC)
