:The old, now broken gallery code is really nothing more than a gallery enveloped in a centered table. The reason I originally introduced that as a gallery standard was because any direct use of the center tag in the gallery syntax also centers thumbnail captions, which are a little harder to read than if they were simply aligned to the left by default.
