In June 2016, Grand Theft Wiki suffered a number of severe technical issues.

Our servers had a catastrophic drive failure and lost all data. This would normally be recoverable from our backups, however due to a mistake by our hosting provider, our automated backups were located on the same set of disks, and so were also lost. This meant we had to revert to our second set of redundant offsite backups, which were much older. There were also separate backups from different times for different types of data (such as images, the database and the code) and some pieces missing altogether, which has made it more complex to restore.

As a result, on 6 August we have restored data from 22 July 2015, and images from February 2014.

This means that:

  • Any edits made between July 2015 and June 2016 have been lost
  • Any users registered between July 2016 and June 2016 will need to re-register
  • Any images uploaded between February 2014 and June 2016 have been lost

However - if you would like to recover any content that was lost, you may be able to find these in Google's Cache or Alexa's WayBackMachine. You can copy the text back into the page, but you may need to fix links and images, or ask another user to help.

It sucks to lose data, particularly when the community have worked so hard - but I'm pleased we've managed to recover 9 out of 10 years of Grand Theft Wiki's history! Obviously we're improving our backup procedures so we can recover from *any* failure much faster.

Thanks for your patience, and let's get this site back to full strength ready for the new GTA game we're expecting to start hearing about very soon!
