It acts as a transition district between the suburbia of Westdyke to the north, and the more concentrated, urban centre: Alderney City to the south. For that reason, Leftwood has mixed land uses. Towards the south of the district, there are more services and denser land use, whilst further north, Leftwood becomes a quieter and more residential locale. Despite its name, Westdyke Memorial Hospital is actually located in southern Leftwood. Leftwood police station is also located in eastern leftwood.
