Big Smoke is the first half-mark storyline mission in Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas accessed independently by protagonist Carl "CJ" Johnson from The Johnson House on Grove Street in Ganton, Los Santos.

Mission

Primary protagonist Carl "CJ" Johnson, after arriving in Grove Street on a bicycle, enters his childhood home and finds a picture of his recently deceased mother, Beverly. He takes a chair and sits down, remembering a time when his sister Kendl threatened to tell Beverly of Carl's antics with deceased younger brother Brian. Suddenly, big-bald-boned Melvin "Big Smoke" Harris, a long time friend of the Johnson family, enters the living room from the kitchen with a baseball bat assuming there is a burglar, and threatens to attack him. Carl reminds Smoke of who he is and the two share a tight hug. Carl and Smoke talk about Beverly's death and that Carl wants revenge before leaving the house and driving to the cemetery at Market in Smoke's black Perennial, which he has just acquired.

Script

(Carl enters the Johnson house and picks up a picture lying on the floor.)

Voices in Carl's head: (Kendl) Stop it! What are you doing? Carl, Brian, stop it! - (Carl) Quit it! Moms will hear! - (Kendl) Mom, they're up to something!

(Carl is sitting and looking at the picture he picked up, when Smoke suddenly enters the room, baseball bat in hand.)

Big Smoke: You picked the wrong house, fool!

CJ: (picks up a chair in defense, backing off) Hey, hey! Big Smoke, it's me, Carl! Chill! Chill!

Big Smoke: CJ? Oh, (drops the bat) my dog! (hugs Carl tight) Wassup? Ha ha ha ha! (releases him) Hey baby, you okay, man?

CJ: No, man, it's my Moms, homie...

Big Smoke: Hey, I don't know why this had to happen, but I promise you, I'm going to find out who killed your moms. The streets is cold, dog. Like it says in the book, we are blessed and cursed.

CJ: What fucking book?

Big Smoke: Same things make us laugh, make us cry. But right now, we gotta take care our business. Go see your brother at the cemetery. C'mon, let's bounce.

(Smoke and Carl exit the house and walk out to Smoke's car, even as a shot zooms in to a close-up of Beverly's photo frame, with Smoke's baseball bat over it.)

Big Smoke: You wanna drive?

CJ: Yeah, that's cool. Nice car, Smoke.

Big Smoke: You know me. It's not cut. Keep the value in it. Keep it real.

Reward

There is no monetary reward, but the mission Sweet & Kendl is automatically triggered.

Trivia

  • Several conspiracy explanations suggest that Smoke was actually waiting for Carl's brother, Grove Street Families leader Sean "Sweet" Johnson, to arrive so he could hit him, just the way he and his real allies, the Ballas, were aiming at Sweet during The Introduction, but Carl's sudden arrival meant that he had to wait a little longer to maintain his secret plans to kill Sweet until his betrayal was exposed despite Sweet surviving. Similarly, the shot of Beverly's frame panning out with Smoke's baseball bat over it puts out a hint that he was involved in her death.
