Stephen - if he was genuinely a friend, then it would normally be fine (for 1 or 2 people). Although usually you would simply list it on your user page, and if anyone actively wanted to add you, they could. However, because you have a very long track record of unsolicited messages, all these little things add up to a LOT of spam.
