==Portals==

What do people think of our current portals - [[Portal:GTA IV]], [[Portal:Characters]] and [[Portal:Vehicles]]? None of them look finished, so could anyone volunteer to jazz them up and keep refreshing the featured articles. Check out some portals on Wikipedia such as [[wp:Portal:Architecture]] and also on Wikiversity such as [http://en.wikiversity.org/wiki/Portal:Primary_Education Primary Education]. Feel free to just hack the portals to pieces and change them completely. We should also think about doing more with the [[Community Portal]], as currently there's a big jump between visiting and getting involved. I'm also trying to make more use of "edit this section" links, so people can edit content without being hit by the [http://gta.wikia.com/index.php?title=Template:Navbox&action=edit big scary code] - so bear that in mind when designing portals. :I don't even think most users know about the portals, and I think they ''definently'' need some work. For example, why do they list the forums? They even show the forums that have nothing to do with the topic of that portal (for example, the GTA IV portal shows the [[Forum:Saving in GTA1|Saving in GTA1 forum]]). A better way of doing that would be instead of automatically listing every forum like the actual forum categories do (like [[Forum:GTA]] etc), regularly update it manually with links to new forums about the subject. As for fixing them up, I will have a look at what I can do some time soon. == Images from German Wikia ==
== Images from German Wikia ==

After talking to staff from [[:de:]], they have asked if they can use images from our wiki. The problem is that they don't want to go through and add a copyright template to every single image they've taken. Since we have [http://gta.wikia.com/index.php?title=Special%3ASearch&ns6=1&ns7=1&search=german&fulltext=Advanced+search a lot of images] from their wiki, I have agreed that we no longer need to specify the source for images used across these wikis. This allows us to use any image on the German GTA wikia without expressly saying where it came from (but if you can, it helps), and they can do the same with our images. I will try and agree with Wikia a method where we can simply include images from another wiki, like <code><nowiki>[[:de:Bild:Image.jpg]]</nowiki></code>, but I doubt that will happen. I have created [[w:c:gta.answers|GTA Answers]], a separate wiki where anyone can ask/answer questions about GTA. If anyone would like to be staff on there, please let me know and I'll promote you. I'd like to get the wiki fleshed out before we start advertising it everywhere. Once we are ready, that will be where we push people for questions about GTA. Please use <code><nowiki>[[w:c:gta.answers:pagename|link]]</nowiki></code> to link there, and <code><nowiki>[[w:c:gta:pagename|link]]</nowiki></code> to link back here. == Should we leave Wikia? ==
As you may know, the new [[Oasis]] skin will cause a lot of problems. There is also the issue of a total lack of respect from Wikia, ignoring the whole communities requests and needs. We have the ability to move away from Wikia at any time (as many others are doing), although they would keep the gta.wikia.com domain, and they would continue to operate their copy of this wiki (unless there was a licencing issue). You can read about the issue at [[Oasis]], or discuss it on our [http://www.thegtaplace.com/forums/topic/25895-new-wikia-skin/ private staff forum]. == Patrolling ==
Inspectors and Administrators can now use [[Special:Patrol]] to semi-automate the revision patrolling process. [[User:Gboyers|Gboyers]] 00:48, 20 October 2010 (BST)
:This looks good, only thing is that the article doesn't show below it, so you sometimes need to go to the article anyway for some edits (to see what the text around the change is, or to see how the edit affected the page). Also, why is it asking me to patrol the edits of staff? == Cleanup task: unused files ==
Hi all. For a staff-only cleanup task, we need to go through [[Special:UnusedFiles]], check whether they're needed, add the useful ones to the pages, and delete the ones that aren't.
I'd suggest we split up into sections for this? Could you put your names (three tildes) next to each topic area, and deal with all the unused files relating to that? Feel free to work on more than one area, or have more than one person on each - I just don't want any to be left behind.
*Vehicles - '''''[[User:Chimpso|Chimpso]]''''' ([[User Talk:Chimpso|Talk]]) 11:37, 22 October 2010 (BST)
*Weapons & HUD icons -
*characters, clothing, artwork -
*Radio stations, logos & icons - [[User:Gboyers|Gboyers]]
*Location, buildings, maps, signs & media -
One thing to bear in mind is that [[:File:Vladivostok.svg|SVG images]] (which are actually code) should be used instead of [[:File:VladivostokFM.png|PNG]]/GIF/JPG wherever possible. You should replace the PNG with SVG, and delete the unused PNG. For any really bad quality (but important) images, put {{template|replace}} on the file page. If you aren't sure, add {{template|prod}}.
Also, I keep finding pages which have no image in the top-right, but have other images in a gallery lower down. Whilst doing this, can you make sure that ''all'' pages have an image in the top-right, wherever possible?
Lets get this sorted over the next couple of weeks, then we can move onto the other tasks! [[User:Gboyers|Gboyers]] 23:13, 21 October 2010 (BST)
:I'm actually going through all of these (slowly but surely) after uploading images for individual sections as I've already done for characters (after re-uploading all the images that didn't transfer). [[User:A-Dust|A-Dust]] 23:20, 21 October 2010 (BST)
::Oh awesome - I wondered why there were almost no character images in there! I'll leave this here for people to give you a hand, unless you'd rather do it differently? Your call. [[User:Gboyers|Gboyers]] 23:45, 21 October 2010 (BST)
:::I'm fine with doing this myself. [[User:A-Dust|A-Dust]] 23:49, 21 October 2010 (BST)
:This is a very tedious job. It would be better if not only the staff do this but also the community. A lot of the unused files can be solved with proper relinking in the galleries. I'm scratching my head just doing GTA IV. I might pull my hair for the rest. It's amazing at the amount of images ZS uploaded. His work is commendable.--'''[[User:Spaceeinstein|spaceeinstein]]''' 06:25, 22 October 2010 (BST)
I absolutely agree - you guys are doing a great job as always. I forgot that the gallery problem would affect this, so yes that needs doing first. The community can help with that, but not with the deletions. [[User:Gboyers|Gboyers]] 09:20, 22 October 2010 (BST)
:I'll help out with vehicles. Should not be a very hard job. I will help with the rest also. Just thought I'd mention the fact that most of the vehicle images are not "Unused". They are just linked to in other image captions, eg ''A Mule in GTA San Andreas (<nowiki>[[File:Image Name|rear quarter view]]</nowiki>)''. Since they're not actually in the articles themselves, it lists them as "Unused". '''''[[User:Chimpso|Chimpso]]''''' ([[User Talk:Chimpso|Talk]]) 11:37, 22 October 2010 (BST)
::Do you think it's worth having images that are only listed as alternate views on the file pages? If we need them, then they should go in the gallery, I think? Otherwise it's basically an unused duplicate (albeit from a different angle). [[User:Gboyers|Gboyers]] 12:16, 22 October 2010 (BST)
I'd say no, but I think it would be best to consult the other staff as well. '''''[[User:Chimpso|Chimpso]]''''' ([[User Talk:Chimpso|Talk]]) 12:22, 22 October 2010 (BST)
:I agree that any images from different angles (or whatever else makes them different) should be placed in a gallery, or somewhere further down the page if there's not enough for a ''gallery'', not just linked to.
