Talk:Cortez' Yacht

Why is the possessive suffix 's removed? Some style guides say -s's and -s' are both correct, but I've never heard that -z' being correct at all.--spaceeinstein 14:51, 6 October 2011 (BST)

There are two different ways of doing the Saxon genitive (making words ending in s/z posessive), and both are seen as correct. Some say you should always just use an apostrophe (not 's) for any words ending in S, Z or X. Others say you should use 's (regardless of its last letter) unless the word is plural, in which case use es'.
Personally, when I write I belong to the first group (so: Jones', Jesus', Cortez'). However, modern spelling (particularly in the US) uses the second format. I say we stick with the first one, the guidelines of which you can read here, but create redirects for anyone who searches for Cortez's (or the completely wrong Cortezes). gboyers talk 20:33, 6 October 2011 (BST)
