The train has the ability to derail when the speed is too intense for the train to handle at about 47 m/s (~170 kph). The train begins to rattle and a single turn can instantly derail the train, but when landing on the water, it will not sink, but float and bob instead. It can also plow through vehicles those who are unlucky enough to be caught right in its tracks. Except for the derailment issue, the train is indestructible. However, even when derailed, the individual segments of the train remain intact, and cannot be destroyed in any way unlike most other vehicles.

A cinematic view mode is the only view available. The player cannot change the position of the camera like when driving other vehicles.
The train has some realistic effects, particularly the ability to derail it at high speeds. The train begins to shake above 47 m/s (~170 kph), at which speed it will derail upon turning.  Trains are immune to all forms of damage, including weapon damage, fire and any physical obstruction, however derailment will render them useless.

Freight at San Fierro's Cranberry Station.

The Freight is a train in Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas, based on the EMD SD40-2 locomotive. It is only available in a gray color. The freight itself is presumably loaded off the Freight Train Station in El Corona north of Unity Station, or at Sobell Railyards. Like the Brown Streak, the Freight can be used to start delivery missions which are necessary to achieve 100% game completion.

Description

The train has some realistic effects, particularly the ability to derail it at high speeds. The train begins to shake above 47 m/s (~170 kph), at which speed it will derail upon turning. Trains are immune to all forms of damage, including weapon damage, fire and any physical obstruction, however derailment will render them useless.

There are no 1st/3rd person views when driving or traveling in the train, and the cinematic view mode is the only view available. Some 3rd-party trainers can offer different viewpoints.

Trivia

  • If the train's engine happens to end up in water, it will stay afloat indefinitely, with the sound of the engine audible above and below water. The player can climb atop the unsinkable engine as if it were a stationary platform, a testament to the train's indestructibility.
  • Starting the Freight mission will clear the player's Wanted level.
  • There is an unused boxcar model that may be spawned with the use of a cheat device, however it cannot be interacted with.
