Grand Theft Auto VI (GTA 6 or GTA VI) is an upcoming game from Rockstar Games, due to launch on 19 November 2026. It's the seventeenth installment in the Grand Theft Auto series.

The last GTA game to launch was GTA V back in 2013 - over thirteen years before GTA VI is due to be released.

Story

Rockstar describes the game like this:

Jason and Lucia have always known the deck is stacked against them. But when an easy score goes wrong, they find themselves on the darkest side of the sunniest place in America, in the middle of a criminal conspiracy stretching across the state of Leonida — forced to rely on each other more than ever if they want to make it out alive.|Rockstar Games

Other characters include Cal Hampton (a friend of Jason's), Brian Heder (a retired drug runner who Jason used to work for), record producer Dre'Quan Priest, Boobie Ike, Raul Bautista and the Real Dimez.

The game follows a criminal couple, Lucia Caminos and Jason Duval, as its two protagonists. Lucia is the series' first female protagonist since the original Grand Theft Auto.

Here's what we know about GTA VI so far:

It's set across several counties in the new state of Leonida (Rockstar's take on Florida), centred on a new version of Vice City (based on Miami) in Vice-Dale County. Other named locations include Port Gellhorn in Kelly County, Waning Sands in Leonard County, Grassrivers and the Leonida Keys in Mariana County, and Ambrosia in Ambrosia County
The two protagonists are Lucia Caminos and Jason Duval
Confirmed for PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S on launch - there's no PC release date yet, and Rockstar hasn't confirmed a PC version at all so far
The game brings modern American life into GTA for the first time, including social media
It runs on a new version of the Rockstar Advanced Game Engine (RAGE 9), reportedly capable of 16K textures^[1]
Trailers and footage have shown a much wider range of vehicles across land, sea and air, along with deeper weapon customisation - engravings, tints and liveries
GTA VI also borrows a little from Rockstar's other big series - the Duke Arms Company brand crosses over from Red Dead, and the game's new banknote designs adapt artwork from Red Dead Redemption 2's Cigarette Cards collectibles (previously reused for GTA Online merchandise), likely thanks to Rockstar San Diego helping out with development

History

February 2022 - Rockstar confirms the next Grand Theft Auto is in active development, its first real acknowledgement of the game
September 2022 - Over 90 videos and screenshots of early development footage leak online (see below)
4 December 2023 - The first trailer is released, a day earlier than planned after leaking online, confirming the game's title for the first time. It pulls in over 90 million views in 24 hours and 200 million within six months. A second, smaller leak - a phone-recorded clip posted to TikTok by an account claiming ties to a Rockstar North employee - surfaces around the same time
December 2024 - GTA VI wins "Most Anticipated Game" at The Game Awards
January 2025 - Photos and videos of the game running on a PlayStation 5 dev kit leak on Reddit
6 May 2025 - A second trailer is released, racking up over 475 million views across platforms in a day, alongside confirmation the game has been delayed to 26 May 2026 (see below)
6 November 2025 - A second delay pushes the release back again, to 19 November 2026. Around the same time, an old Vimeo demo reel from a former Rockstar Toronto animator surfaces, showing unseen character animations
December 2025 - GTA VI wins "Most Anticipated Game" at The Game Awards for the second year running
18 June 2026 - Rockstar reveals the cover art and opens pre-orders, along with details of the Ultimate Edition and Vintage Vice City Pack

GTA 6 Leaks

On September 18, 2022, a new user on GTAForums.com called 'teapotuberhacker' posted download links to over 90 videos and screenshots purporting to be of the next Grand Theft Auto game.

This apparent leak appeared to show in-progress developement and testing footage, including behind-the-scenes technical logs. The content reinforced a number of the rumours that had already been circulating, including a Florida setting, and male and female playable characters.

The pictures and videos spread widely, before Take Two issued takedown notices for any sites hosting them. Take-Two Interactive also filed notice of the breach with the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission on September 19.

The next day, Rockstar Games released a statement on Twitter condemning the leak:

“We recently suffered a network intrusion in which an unauthorised third party illegally accessed and downloaded confidential information from our systems, including early development footage for the next Grand Theft Auto. At this time, we do not anticipate any disruption to our live game services nor any long-term effect on the development of our ongoing projects.
“We are extremely disappointed to have any details of our next game shared with you all in this way. Our work on the next Grand Theft Auto game will continue as planned and we remain as committed as ever to delivering an experience to you, our players, that truly exceeds your expectations. We will update everyone again soon and, of course, will properly introduce you to this next game when it is ready. We want to thank everyone for their ongoing support through this situation.”

Several further leaks followed - see the History timeline above - along with plenty of fakes made with 3D modelling software or AI, which fooled social media despite never being real.

Delays

On 2 May 2025, Rockstar announced the delay of GTA VI from Fall 2025 into 2026:

Then, on 6 November 2025, Rockstar delayed the game a second time:

Grand Theft Auto VI will now release on Thursday, November 19, 2026.
We are sorry for adding additional time to what we realize has been a long wait, but these extra months will allow us to finish the game with the level of polish you have come to expect and deserve.
We want to thank you again for your patience and support. While the wait is a little longer, we are incredibly excited for players to experience the sprawling state of Leonida and a return to modern day Vice City.

Editions

GTA VI will come in two editions:

Standard Edition - $80 / £70 / €80
Ultimate Edition - $100 / £90 / €100, which adds extra clothing, stores and side missions

Pre-ordering, or buying either edition before 20 November 2026, comes with a free month of GTA+ plus the Vintage Vice City Pack (a '55 Stanier and some exclusive clothes and weapons). Only the Standard Edition gets a physical release, and even then it's just a download code in a box rather than an actual disc - everything else is digital-only. Pre-orders opened on 25 June 2026, and pre-loading will be available a week before launch.

Music

In February 2024, the Spotify canvas for Anita Ward's "Ring My Bell" briefly switched to the GTA VI logo, sparking rumours the song would feature in the second trailer. Ward's team denied it days later, and the song didn't end up in the trailer anyway.

Later that year, in September 2024, Martyn Ware of Heaven 17 went public after Rockstar reportedly offered the band just $7,500 for a full buyout of the rights to use "Temptation" in the game. He turned it down and didn't hold back about what he thought of the offer.
