A mountain lion in Paleto Forest.

Mountain Lions, also known as Cougars, are a wild big cat appearing in Grand Theft Auto V. They appear in the edges of Los Santos (such as Vinewood Hills and Murrieta Heights), Los Santos County and in mountainous areas of Blaine County (Mount Chiliad, for example). They are aggressive towards the player (as Franklin Clinton, Michael De Santa or Trevor Philips) and will attack without provocation. An attack from a mountain lion will leave the player dead.

Mountain lions will always growl while stalking the player with any nearby pedestrians running away to avoid being attacked. A red dot will then appear on the radar indicating a threat. If the player has not reached the safe place (roofs or inside cars) or killed the mountain lion, it will run quickly towards its prey and kill it by biting the neck. While hunting as Trevor, mountain lions will be shown on the map when using the deer diaphragm provided by Cletus Ewing, resulting in players being tricked into their own death. They can, however, be sold to Cletus if successfully killed.

In the PlayStation 4, Xbox One and PC versions of GTA V, Franklin Clinton is required to photograph a mountain lion for the Los Santos tourist board. The player can also play as a mountain lion by eating a Peyote Plant.

Trivia

  • Mountain lions were first confirmed by CVG who spotted one while watching Franklin Clinton jump out of a helicopter.
  • Mountain lions may appear while performing yoga as Michael on Mount Gordo.
  • The player, as Trevor, can survive a mountain lion attack by using his special ability.
