Nikolai "Niko" Bellic is the protagonist (main character) of Grand Theft Auto IV. He has a strong Eastern European accent. Judging by the surname, it is likely he is from a former Yugoslav country, such as Serbia, Croatia, or Bosnia, where surnames ending with -ic (pronounced like 'itch' and simply meaning "child of") are incredibly common. He could also be from Russia since Seryoga, a russian rap artist, was on the backround music on the second trailer with the song "King Ring". Bellic is more and more likely Russian in origin. However, it has been confirmed that Niko is actually Serbian as he swears in Serbian and he sends e-mails to his mother in Serbian. At least four facts so far support this hypothesis. Firstly, during the mission "Three's A Crowd," Niko must change his clothes to impress Michelle, a potential girlfriend. Roman sends him to a thrift store at Mohawk and Hove, a store which has Russian Cyrillic lettering up in the windows and a whole lot of Russian Federation and Soviet memorabilia (winter hats with the hammer and sickle, army hats with the Russian flag on it). After shopping at the store Niko calls up Roman and tells him that "it seems like the store brought the clothes from the old country." Secondly, whilst taking Little Jacob back to his place after the chase, Bellic states that Roman "owes some money to another Russian," obviously referring to Vlad. It can also be oftenly heard over the radio that "undesirable Russian immigrants" have been coming more often to Liberty City.
Nikolai "Niko" Bellic is the protagonist (main character) of Grand Theft Auto IV. He has a strong Eastern European accent. Niko is of Serbian descent, and has previously fought in the Bosnian War (One of the reasons he came to Liberty City was to find Darko, a man who betrayed Niko's army unit during the war.)
In the debut trailer he has a brief monologue: "Life is complicated; I killed people... smuggled people... sold people. Perhaps here, things will be different."

In his mid-thirties, he travels to Liberty City enticed by the promise of a new, glamorous life (With women, money, and cars, as Roman promised)by his cousin Roman, only to be disappointed by his lies - at which point the player of GTA IV takes control.
