Safehouses in GTA IV

As in previous Grand Theft Auto games, safehouses in Grand Theft Auto IV are available in the city for Niko Bellic to use to save the game, watch TV, and change his clothes. All in all, GTA IV has a total of five safehouses, one of which will no longer be accessible after the second safehouse is unlocked. Thereafter, the player will automatically acquire two more safehouses and is offered the opportunity to acquire a fifth safehouse as a choice.

The number of safehouses in GTA IV is a sharp reduction compared to Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas, which offered up to 37 safehouses. However, none of the five safehouses are required to be purchased, as the player is automatically awarded a safehouse upon completion of a specific mission.

The safehouses are completely redesigned in GTA IV. Instead of spinning save icons, the player must sleep on futons (sofa-beds) or beds inside the safehouse to save games. Garages used to store vehicles are replaced by yellow outlined "RESIDENTS PARKING ONLY" parking lots located on the side of the street outside the safehouses; these parking lots are capable of holding up to two full-size sedans and are also known to be able to save helicopters. A television is also made available in each safehouse, and two safehouses offer additional equipment.

It should be noted that the safehouses' parking lots, despite the safehouses themselves being locked during a certain amount of time, are still usuable to the player. For example, players may park vehicles at the Bohan safehouse when the safehouse isn't yet available for the player to save games.
