- Game related
- Grand Theft Auto: Vice City Stories is released on the PlayStation 2 on March 6 in North America and on March 9 elsewhere.
- Preview trailer for Grand Theft Auto IV released on March 29.
- On November 8, Take-Two Interactive announced a proposed settlement to allow people to swap AO-rated copies of Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas for M-rated versions in the United States, which eventually saw at least 2,676 claims for the compensation package.
- Legal and criminal activities
- Lawyer and GTA critic Jack Thompson stated that he would take measures to stop the sale of Rockstar Games titles to minors resulting in Take-Two Interactive filing a lawsuit in Florida to block him from trying to declare their games as a public nuisance. Thompson later filed a countersuit but both parties reached a settlement on April 20. Thompson would file another lawsuit on September 18 claiming that lawyer Tom Goldberg, who is assassinated in Grand Theft Auto IV (released in a GTA IV trailer) was based upon himself.
- On December 19, a judge in the US state of New Mexico threw out a wrongful death lawsuit filed by Jack Thompson on behalf of Cody Posey, who had been convicted of killing his father, stepmother and stepsister, as Sony and Take-Two did not have offices in the state. Grand Theft Auto games were believed to have influenced Cody.
- British teenager Ryan Chinnery began his criminal activities, which included attempted rape and grievous bodily harm. Grand Theft Auto games were believed by some to have influenced his actions.

- A fifteen year old Mexican girl was found dead in a pizza oven in the house of Mark Fostenburg. He later settled out of court, despite claiming to be out of Los Santos at the time, with the girls parents moving into a nearby house.
