The Commission in GTA 4 is based on New York City's real Mafia Commission: The five families in New York City's Commission are :
- The Bonnano family (represented by the Messina Family)
- The Colombo family (represented by the Ancelotti family)
- The Gambino family (represented by the Gambetti family)
- The Genovese family (not represented in the game)
- The Lucchese family (represented by the Lupisella family)
While the Pavano Family has no similarities to any Mafia family in the United States, they can be based on the movie Analyze That were Cathy Moriarty-Gentile played a female Mafia Boss.
Trivia
The Gambetti-Ancelotti rivalry is possibly based on the Gambino-Colombo war, as they are the only two families in the New York City Commission that are not allied with each other.
