Music in GTA V

(Redirected from Radio Stations in GTA V)

In Grand Theft Auto V, instead of just having radio stations, many missions are scored, with specific music tracks played at specific moments in order to build atmosphere and tension. However, radio stations continue to exist.

We though could do something interesting if we scored missions in GTA. Obviously we didn't want to lose radio stations, so we thought we'd do both. Exactly how we're going to balance between the two we're not entirely sure yet – we're still trying to figure that out. But we have some very cool people doing the score, different people, who will work in the same stem-based system that we used in the other games".

Original Soundtrack

The original soundtrack in GTA V was composed by the electronic group Tangerine Dream, the composer Woody Jackson, and the rappers and producers The Alchemist and Oh No, and was then mixed by DJ Shadow.

GTA V is the first game in the series that features a dynamic score, adapting to the player's progress and situation in-game. Max Payne 3, Rockstar's last major release before GTA V, already used the same system, where every track is decomposed in several different parts that are live-mixed by the computer in-game in order to reflect the player's advancement.

The original soundtrack was commercially released as part two of The Music of Grand Theft Auto V, while part one and three mostly contained songs heard on the radio stations.

In-universe bands

Logos of the new bands appearing in GTA V.

The band Love Fist from the GTA III Era make a return. One Strangers and Freaks mission has Trevor Philips betting up the bassist Willie to get a "souvenir" for Nigel and Mrs. Thornhill, an eccentric, elderly English couple who collect celebrities' personal items. On the reality talent show Fame or Shame, contestant William Angio sings a power ballad from Jezz Torrent's solo career. Several new bands are also mentioned in GTA V, including Barbeque Spaceflight, Sorry Commode, Softly Softly Catchy Monkey, Anguished Cornhole, and Fatal Incursion; however, none of these bands make a physical appearance within in the game nor do any of their songs appear on the game's soundtrack.

Nightride FM

In early 2012, Kavinsky revealed that he was going to be the host of a radio station in GTA V called Nightride FM. However, there have been no news about that station whatsoever since then.
