Nines and AKs is the sixth storyline mission and fourth central storyline mission in Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas, given to protagonist Carl "CJ" Johnson by secondary antagonist and high-ranking Grove Street Families member Melvin "Big Smoke" Harris from deuteragonist and gang leader Sean "Sweet" Johnson's house in the Grove Street cul-de-sac in Ganton, Los Santos, San Andreas.
Mission
Sweet, childhood friend Lance "Ryder" Wilson and Smoke are playing a game of dominoes as Carl comes in. Carl asks them what kind of weapons the gang has. Ryder replies negatively, with Carl leading to think about Emmet, a member of the Seville Boulevard Families. Smoke decides to accompany him to Emmet's place.
The two hop in Smoke's newly acquired teal blue Glendale as they make their way to Emmet's place in Willowfield. Emmet doesn't recognize them at first but after a brief talk they introduce each other. Emmet offers his assistance to them as they go target practicing. Smoke demonstrates how to shoot stuff, as Carl follows his every move. Besides shooting glass bottles, he also shoots at a gas tank of a dumped vehicle. Emmet hails Carl's shooting skills and tells him to drop by whenever he needs a gun. Carl and Smoke drive back to Smoke's house in Idlewood afterward.
After a moment, Carl receives a call from Sweet and is told to check out the Binco clothing store nearby the gym in Ganton and change to a pair of green colored clothes to represent Grove Street. Carl heads for there, purchases new clothes, and exits the shop.
Script
Big Smoke: Gimme 15, motherfucker!
Ryder: I'll write down in a second. I ain't going to pencil whip you, fat sucker. Let me play first.
(Carl comes in.)
CJ: A'ight, wassup?
Big Smoke: Wassup, man?
Sweet: What's cracking?
CJ: Who's winning?
Big Smoke: Who you think, huh? Me!
Ryder: That's does it. That's game null and void, motherfuckers!
CJ: So, what kind of guns we working now?
Ryder: One-times came through, raided the spot. We ain't got shit now.
CJ: Well what you going to do if the Ballas roll through, throw shoes at them? Say, what happen at Emmet?
Sweet: Emmet? Shit, gangsters these days got Mac's, AK's and all kinds of stuff. Emmet, on other hand, ain't got shit.
CJ: Well, until we got that plug, we gotta deal with cat that always been there for us.
Big Smoke: Emmet's Seville Boulevard Families, we ain't too close these days, but nonetheless, I'll take you see him. Get ourselves strapped up. Come on, man.
Ryder: (to Sweet in the background) Nigga, shake 'em up again.
(Carl and Smoke hop in Smoke's newly acquired teal blue Glendale.)
CJ: What happened to the families? Where the love at?
Big Smoke: Shit happens. Seville wrongs Temple, Temple wrongs Grove. Bad blood leads to bad blood. If you read the book, that's the way of the world baby!
CJ: Yeah, well you know you gotta keep it real.
Big Smoke: I admire you Carl. You're a leader, a visionary. Remember me when you get to the top.
CJ: Give it a rest, Smoke. You're full of shit.
(Carl and Smoke arrive at Emmet's place in Willowfield.)
Big Smoke: That's my man right there, you know what I'm saying?
(Carl and Smoke approach Emmet, but he accidentaly misfires his Desert Eagle and backs off.)
Emmet: Hey! Who shot at me? (looks at the two, pointing a gun at them) What you kids want?
CJ: Hey, hey, pops, hey, what's happenin'?
Emmet: Aren't you Beverly Johnson's boy?
CJ: That's right.
Emmet: Brian! Say, ain't you dead?
Carl Johnson: No, Emmet - the other one. Carl.
Emmet: (lowers his gun) I'm sorry about Beverly.
Big Smoke: That's why we're here, sir. We want to get the people who did it.
Emmet: Well, you've come to the right place. Try anything you like, boy.
(Carl and Smoke look into Emmet's weapon storage.)
Big Smoke: Man, look at this old shit.
(Smoke demonstrates how to use the weapons. A demonstration on a pistol is going on.)
Big Smoke: Die, little glass Balla fool!
(Carl shoots a bottle.)
Emmet: Ah, Beverly'd be so proud of you, boy.
(Smoke demonstrates again.)
Big Smoke: Shit, I'm the best there ever was!
(Carl shoots three bottles.)
Emmet: Yeah, that's real Grove Street style, now!
(Smoke shoots at more bottles while crouching and rolling.)
Big Smoke: Cap your ass! And your ass! You want some too? Ice cold, baby! I knew I was the chosen one!
CJ: Oh, man, check out 'Special Agent Big Smoke'!
(Carl shoots at five bottles the same way.)
Emmet: Aw, you're makin' me so proud of you!
(Carl and Smoke have a discussion with Emmet after the target practice ends with Carl shooting a dumped waste car.)
Big Smoke: Damn! You a killer baby, ice cold! But remember something, real strength comes from within, my brother.
Emmet: Listen to the boy.
Big Smoke: Yeah, I guess Liberty didn't soften you none, huh? Hey look, let's split. Hey, I'll see you around, Emmet.
Emmet: (walking behind them to see them off) I'm 100% behind you boys. But remember thins, you didn't get 'em from me. And remember this, Emmet is the place for guns! I've always got high quality merchandise. And I've been proudly serving the community for over 30 years!
Big Smoke: (laughs) Crazy old fool. Hey look, you drive, man.
(Carl and Smoke hop back in the Glendale.)
CJ: I seen newer cannons than this strap in a museum. Where we goin'?
Big Smoke: Hey, I'm real tired, dude, drop me in my crib, baby.
CJ: What's going on, man, shit seems pretty fucked up?
Big Smoke: People have to open their eyes, and their hearts, CJ.
CJ: What are you talking about?
Big Smoke: I'm talking about the choices all men face, brother. Sometimes, they seem real, but other times there's no choice at all.
CJ: At least you still talking shit. You ain't changed a bit.
Big Smoke: Who me? No never.
(They arrive at Smoke's house.)
Big Smoke: Thanks, CJ, I'll see you around.
CJ: Later, Smoke. (turns to leave)
(Phone rings.)
CJ: Speak.
Sweet: I thought you was representing?
CJ: What?
Sweet: Correct me if I'm wrong, but I thought you was rolling with Grove Street again.
CJ: Already told you I am!
Sweet: Well I ain't seen you in yo' colors yet! You gotta fly the flag, man! Ain't nobody gonna respect you if you ain't representing your hood!
CJ: Alright man, my bad. I just ain't got around to it yet.
Sweet: There's a Binco around the corner from the gym in Ganton, go get yourself some greens!
(Carl purchases clothes from the Binco in Ganton and exits the shop.)
Reward
The reward for this mission is an increase in respect. The missions Drive-By and OG Loc are unlocked. A pistol would now always spawn at Emmet's, and the player can use the Binco, ProLaps and Sub Urban clothing stores.
Trivia
- Despite Emmet saying 'Emmet's is the place for guns', the only weapon available is a 9mm Pistol.
- During the first cutscene, the song playing in Sweet's house is Dr Dre & Snoop Dogg - Fuck Wit Dre Day; this song can also be heard on Radio Los Santos.
- Despite the name of the mission, an AK-47 is never seen in the mission, however Ryder gets an AK off Emmet in Reuniting the Families.
- Emmet shoots a Desert Eagle gun but gives off the 9mm pistol sound.
- In the PC version of the game, even if the controls are set to "Mouse + Keys" (standard controls configuration), which doesn't have an auto-aim feature, the instructions given to shoot the bottles still displays controls only used for auto-aiming.
- During the cutscene, Emmet's wearing a red shirt under his jacket, but while in game learning how to shoot, Emmet is wearing a white shirt under his jacket.
- The player can cause basketballs to spawn by repeatedly blowing up Big Smoke's car during the mission.[1] However, this will cause the mission to fail.
